Dozens gather in downtown Springfield to protest the presidential inauguration
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Dozens of protesters take to the streets in Springfield on Inauguration Day.
They say they are fighting for the rights of the marginalized in the country.
“We are out here speaking our peace about the incoming administration,” said Lucas Underwood.
On Monday afternoon, he and dozens of others gathered on the square in downtown Springfield.
“Help people understand that the billionaire class, the business owners, the big rich boys up on Wall Street don’t have an interest in our wellbeing as a working class,” he said.
Lucy Mayfield also took to the streets to get out her message.
“The Party for Socialism and Liberation, nationally, has made a call for protests of the inauguration because of Trump’s far-right agenda, anti-immigration policies, as well as his agenda that is coming up very shortly to force undocumented immigrants out of the country,” she explained.
She says the promises Donald Trump made in his inauguration speech of unity don’t hold true for her.
“I don’t think he’s sincere. It’s one of those things that you can agree with the words of certain things but I doubt the sincerity,” she said.
The group says they want to highlight the struggles of working-class people.
“We think that workers should have the power and should be the ones running their own worlds,” said Mayfield.
They are working to unify the community for a better future.
“We do care about the people. We do care about the people of Springfield. We care about the people in Missouri,” said Mayfield. “I think the most important thing is that we need to work towards better unity, towards better listening. We need to work together to create a better society, to create a better world.”
Underwood said, “I hope we can bring some awareness to the struggles that a lot of the marginalized people in our community are facing.”
