Minas de El Portalet (Mina Rosario y Mina Elisita), Sallent de Gallego
Small fluorite mines in a stratabound deposit. Mining in this area dates back to the 18th century, but systematic exploration started in the early 1960s. The last mine was closed in 1991.
Fluorite extracted from these mines, and especially of the Rosario Mine, has been used in the manufacture of optical components since the 19th century because of its extreme purity, both from fragments of high transparency and carving lenses (Zeiss), as for fusion to create high-tech components in particle physics to CERN.
Coordinates are given for "Rosario" mine, located close the main road to France, around 1.500 m from the France-Spanish border.
"Elisita" mine is located very close the France-Spanish border in the next coordinates: 42º 48´ 04´´ N - 00º 25´ 25´´ W . The mine is located approximately 700 meters from "Ventas de El Portalet", just in the border, and are accessed by a track that goes to the west, just behind these.
After visiting these mines may be interesting to visit the fluorite mines located just across the border, in "Cirque d´Anéou", in France. See: http://www.mindat.org/loc-262364.html
