'Dega's plans to pave draws raves The announcement that the Talladega Superspeedway racing surface will be repaved for the first time in 26 years drew thumbs up from those who use it. Track officials confirmed Thursday that the 2.66- BY JIMMY CREED Star Sports Editor A mile facility will be repaved for the first time since 1979 immediately following the Aaron's Dream Weekend next April. That came as welcomed news to the drivers, most of whom have never raced on a new surface at Talladega. "The track hasn't been paved since 1979, which was when my dad was rookie of the year," said Dale Earnhardt Jr., a five-time TSS winner. Lynch said. *Twenty-six years has certainly been a long time to go without a project this extensive. so there's no question that the time had come to repave." Lynch said. "It will ensure that Talladega Superspeedway continues to uphold its reputation for the most exciting. most competitive racing throughout the entire NASCAR circuit for years to come. Lynch also said that, if history is an indicator, the races immediately after the project's completion have a chance to' be historic. In the first race following the 1979 resurfacing., a dozen drivers swapped the lead 40, times and Buddy Baker posted his fourth TSS victory in the Winston 500 on May 4. 1980. It was first paved when the track was built in 1969 and was repaved again following the first race on Sept. 14. 1969. That project began In. late 1969 and stretched into early 1970.
