Talladega 500 Still To Be Run Today (Part 2)

(Continued From Page 1) is now closed. It will reopen again in the morning at 9 o'clock and those drivers who would like to compete have your cars ready and on the line at the proper time. .."There will be a race here tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock. Anyone who does not plan to run, please get your cars out of the garage in order to make room for those who do wish to race." BEFORE FRANCE left the garage area, there was a confrontation with Paul Dean, an independent driver from Sweetwater, Tenn., over something France had allegedly said about his running in today's race. France asked Dean to "come around and get in the car so we can talk, you're welcome to run on this track anytime." Dean joined France in the car and the two engaged in a long discussion -with the windows rolled up. Just before the PA system asked that the garage area •be cleared of everyone, Petty returned and said, "'We're going to roll it." Petty's car, strapped to a big truck, was the first to leave the garage area and head out. Others followed. But, in the words of Bill France, president of NASCAR and the corporation which owns Alabama International Motor Speedway, "We're going to have a race here Sunday afternoon. And I'll guarantee you the fans will be pleased when they leave." ' 500
