Sports talk is the Dave Darling’s Weekend I f it seems as though the Central Florida sports-talk landscape is changing faster than your Florida winter lawn, it’s not your imagination. Aweek after AM 1080 (WHOO) added local programming to its lineup, 740 AM (WQTM) said Thursday it’s bringing back sports talk. Clear Channel Communications pulled sports programming from WQTM in January 2008 in favor of a Latin-music format. Central Florida fans hated the move because it left the area with just one sports-talk station (ESPN-1080). It’s unclear when the change will occur on 740, but we can expect it soon — certainly by mid- February. Clear Channel Orlando programming director Chris Kampmeier said the decision to bring back sports talk was a matter of dollars and sense. “This is a for-profit business and we’ve been disappointed with the Spanish-only performance,” Kampmeier said. The new lineup is not set, but expect 540 AM (WFLA) morning drive-time host Dan Sileo as well as evening hosts Mike Tuck and Shot Doctor to move back to 740. Other lineup candidates include Dan Patrick , Jim Rome , Andrew Siciliano and J.T. the Brick . Interestingly, if Shot Doctor and Tuck are moved to the afternoon drive-time slot, Shot would be on air opposite his longtime partner at WQTM, Jerry O’Neill , now on ESPN-1080 with Brian Fritz . The moves come as Clear Channel announced this week it was cutting its U.S. workforce by 1,850 employees. Sileo, whose show began airing in Orlando in 2002 and in Tampa in 2004, has also begun simul- casting in Jacksonville on 930 the Fox (WFXJ). Sileo said his goal is to be on the air in all of Florida’s major markets. He said he’s been in discussions with a Miami station for some time, but for now is happy to be back on WQTM. “I didn’t like the fact that they dropped sports on 740 The Team in the first place,” the former UM and Bucs lineman said. “I’m happy about going back because it means 24 hours a day of sports and it’s a stronger signal.” Dave Darling can be reached at ddarling@orlandosentinel.com.
