Issues fixed

Game won't start

This issue seems to be more prevalent for those trying to launch the game with the updated engine/executable instead of the original GameMaker version.
Install OpenAL[citation needed]
Disable statistics (FPS counters) software
Programs that report computer statistics such as frame rate, GPU usage, memory usage, etc. can cause the game to not start correctly, so it's recommended to shut them down if you're having issues launching the game.
Programs that use RivaTuner Statistics Server, such as MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision X, allow you to exclude a game's executable file to prevent RivaTuner from attempting to look at the game if you wish to keep MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision X running for those that want to view their system's statistics.
  1. Open RivaTuner Statistics Server if installed.
  2. Click the "+" button to open a separate window that will ask you to select the executable.
  3. Locate HotlineMiami.exe in the installation folder.
  4. On the right, look for "Application Detection Level" and select "None".
  5. Minimize RivaTuner Statistics and try to launch the game.
  6. If you're still having issues, try excluding the OpenGL executable by repeating steps 2 through 4 but selecting HotlineGL.exe instead.

Window not fully visible

Change Windows compatibility settings[4]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>.
  2. Right-click on HotlineGL.exe
  3. Properties
  4. Compatibility
  5. Tick "Override high DPI scaling behavior" and set "Scaling performed by:" to "Application", and apply.
If this setting is not there (older versions of Windows): tick "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings", and apply.

Game won't start (Linux)

If the game doesn't start with these kind of errors in terminal:

Running Hotline Miami
./start.sh: line 20: ./hotline_launcher: cannot execute: required file not found
Running Hotline Miami
./hotline_launcher: error while loading shared libraries: XXXXXX.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Running Hotline Miami
./Hotline: error while loading shared libraries: XXXXXX.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

It is asking about missing i386 libraries.

Could happen with DRM-Free and GOG versions.
Steam version should work right away.
Solution 1: Install needed i386 libraries[5]
Steps are for Debian/Ubuntu based Linux distributions.
  1. Allow i386 architecture for the system: sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
  2. Update repositories: sudo apt update
  3. Install needed libraries and dependencies: sudo apt install libc6:i386 libasound2t64:i386 libasound2-data libasound2-plugins:i386 libgtk2.0-0t64:i386 libopenal1:i386 libglu1-mesa:i386 libvorbisfile3:i386 libcggl:i386 libgl1:i386
It works with no errors.
Install system-wide libraries only for a game is not the best practice, but should be safe meanwhile they are updated.
Some i386 libraries can be deprecated at any point.
Some i386 libraries are available without adding the i386 architecture, but not all the needed.
Solution 2: (Only for GOG version) Using Minigalaxy through Flatpak[5]
By default, extra libraries are installed but contained making more safe and easy to go make it work.
Could appear extra errors and need extra configuration to make some things work with Flatpaks.
  1. Install Minigalaxy as Flatpak https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.sharkwouter.Minigalaxy
  2. Start, log in and install Hotline Miami through the app.
  3. If when trying to play it, it shows:
./Hotline: error while loading shared libraries: libCgGL.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    or
./Hotline: error while loading shared libraries: libCg.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Download and unzip this file where Hotline Miami is installed through Minigalaxy (Default path: $HOME/GOG Games/Hotline Miami/). It extracts the two missing libraries at <path-to-game>/game/lib.
Needs to copy extra static libraries, without auto updates.
It still could show an error when exiting the game related to libc.so.6. Not fix yet, but It doesn't affect the game, it seems related to Flatpak container.

"GameBaker has evolved over the years with every game it was used on, and the graphics engine saw the biggest changes. For the initial console releases of Hotline Miami, GameBaker integrated with Phyre Engine, which later was also used in the upgraded PC release. We were then asked to replace Dennator/Devolver's original GameMaker 7 version on Steam with our own GameBaker for better run-time performance and improved stability."
