Based on the debut novel of the same name by writer Gillian Flynn ("Gone Girl"), the eight-episode series "Sharp Objects" stars Amy Adams, in her first major role on the small screen, as reporter Camille Preaker, who returns to her small hometown to investigate mysterious, unsolved crimes. Two girls are missing, one of whom was found dead and presumed murdered. As she searches for clues, Camille reunites with her estranged family -- overbearing mother Adora, stepfather Alan Crellin, and half sister Amma -- which rekindles traumatic childhood memories, including the death of her younger sister. Piecing together a psychological puzzle from her past, Camille begins to identify with the young victims a bit too closely.

Critics Consensus

A nearly unbearable slow burn, Sharp Objects maintains its grip with an unshakably grim atmosphere and an outstanding cast led by a superb Amy Adams.

We don't see female anti-heroes like Camille on TV very often, a woman whose trauma and bad choices are written on her body in ways you will remember long after the show's final credits have rolled.

Misogyny and trauma are the focus and the feeling of Sharp Objects, but the story is so empathetic to women's perspectives that it never feels exploitative. A deeply immersive, feminist take on TV crime.

Sharp Objects is part and parcel of the streaming era, not an outlier. Put another way, don't take my word for it that the show is fantastic.

Amazing series that captives right up to (literally) the very last shot! Cast is flawless.

Enjoyable but I wasn’t impressed with the ending, I had to further read about the book ending to have a clear picture, so I thought that wasn’t played out so well.

Had so much potential its almost amazing it was as boring as it was. Psychological, yes. Great acting, sure. Yet 8 full hours of boring nonsense until the last episode.

Slow burn, Guessed the ending so it wasn’t that shocking. Great acting

Read the Gillian Flynn novel years ago. Thought it was pretty good. But this adaption is art. Only halfway through the series, but it could bomb the next half and I wouldn't care - it's already one of the best things I've seen in years. Somewhere between Lynch and the Three Colours Blue guy, Kieslowski. It's a dream. It's a world. It's a vision.
