In Trinity’s Art History Program, students discover how artworks shape our cultural worlds. Combining close observations of real artworks and historically-grounded research, our students learn to build careful, evidence-based arguments about visual and material culture from the deep past to the present.

Beginning with broad, regional surveys of Western and East Asian art, coursework progresses to upper-level courses that explore topics such as American architecture, colonial Latin America, Baroque Rome, contemporary art, Chinese painting, and the art market. The Art History Program provides both groundwork and specialization while also emphasizing the critical thinking and writing skills that set our students up to succeed in a variety of fields beyond college.

The Art History Program proudly provides a diverse group of opportunities for its students. Our majors take up internships at nearby museums, curate exhibitions on campus, and visit cultural landmarks and museums to conduct on-site research every semester. In addition, our popular minors in architectural studies and art history allow students to expand their training. A museum studies certificate will also be available soon.
