Hello!

I post arthropods from video games. Feel free to submit some, if you like! (Gotta be an arthropod though, no molluscs or flatworms and such!)

Please have a look at the archive!

There's also a spreadsheet for rejected submissions. If your submission isn't on there, then I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I try to get my own screenshots from games I own, but a lot of them are also from wikis. Many posts may have a mix of the two!

I am not an entomologist, just a person who likes bugs. I may be wrong sometimes or make a comparison that isn't entirely right... I do my best though.

I hope you enjoy Bug!

Simple Roach - OMORI

"Ah! I've been spotted! Please don't tell anyone I'm here! I just like digging in the pantry... I mean... who doesn't?"

The Simple Roach is a simple roach. Not much to it, just a very normal and respectable pixel roach. Yeap.

It only appears if the player's "WTF value", a random number between 1-to-13 set near the start of the game, is 4 or higher. Every playthrough is a gamble. Fateful roach....

Diremite - Final Fantasy XIV

"Diremites are a family of vilekin with a distinct social hierarchy. Their colonies are led by the females—the egg-laying "banemites"—of which there are rarely more than three or four. A small group of adult males, or "diremites," serve as soldiers, while innumerable larval mites, or "mitelings," attend to tasks of simple labor. Diremite colonies are nomadic, and will strip an area bare of prey before moving on to a new location."

These big mites have huge, scorpion-like tails, many eyes and jagged mouths that make them really cute.

Most varieties of Diremites have access to a "Silkscreen" attack that deals damage in a line.

Scorpion and Decayed Desert Scorpion - MapleStory

"A type of scorpion that lives only in the desert. Although its tail has a poisonous stinger, the creature almost never uses it. Russellon, who lost an eye to this species of scorpion, is a very rare case."

A cute brown scorpion creature wearing a bandana! Also it has hair for some reason...? The decayed version is a sickly green with glowing eyes and some sort of evil black energy emanating from it. It does not look very happy about its predicament.

The Decayed version appears in a story where monsters known as Omens caused creatures to rise as undead after dying. The only such undead we see are desert scorpions and wasps though.

Laventot - Yaoling: Mythical Journey

"The wings of Laventot can emit faint light at night which cause dormant flowers to bloom. Because their chitin can restore the chitin of Yaoling, many Keepers collect Laventots for their chitin to make energy boosting potions."

A butterfly-like Yaoling with no legs. The sprite makes it seem like the wings are coming out of one big head, although perhaps the pink area is meant to be fluff behind it.

It knows Lunar Ballet, a mana-restoring ability, and it attacks by launching dark-elemental butterfly projectiles at foes. It seems to be a support monster without much power, but early on it dealt a surprising amount of damage on my team.

Keoruworm - Acrolyte

"Passive serpentine arthropod with a hardened segmented shell, commonly found in isolated caves near Eyra's surface. Subsists off of minerals and nutrients buried in the soil."

The log entry describes it well enough, it's a tapering, relatively short myrapod sorta thing, but it also does remind me of some kind of larva. I like how its segments are sorta diagonal, overlapping the next segment.

They serve as the basic archetype of platformer enemy that continuously crawls around a single piece of terrain, crawling on floors, walls and ceilings without ever turning around. These ones ARE smart enough to drop off when shot and potentially hit you though.

Spidor - Shakes and Fidget

A cartoony little spider with four big eyes. It's quite cute and... the legs are coming out of the cephalothorax, instead of treating the abdomen as the base body and turning the cephalothorax into a distinct head! Yay!

This one's a pet that can be found in the Rotten Lands sometimes.

Poison Bug - Decktamer

"The sting remains painful for five days!"

A spiny, purple caterpillar with mandibles that ooze venom. Did they say sting when they meant bite, like an inversion of how people talk about ant bites when they mean stings? It has antennae too. Notably it looks like it might also just have lots of regular legs instead of prolegs? Maybe? They're all sharp and pointy.

This bug is an item that can be used to inflict a monster with poison for two turns, normally dealing 3 damage total, as poison deals damage equal to the status' remaining turns. I love dealing 3 damage.

Damselfly - Final Fantasy XIV

"Unlike most Eorzean vilekin which feature only one or two pairs of wings, damselflies possess six, though only the uppermost pair is thought to be used by the insect in flight. Some naturalists have theorized that the remaining five leaf-like pairs serve to lure smaller vilekin in search of a meal—vilekin which the fly then consumes itself. Damselflies are also known to be extremely territorial and will move about the same path for almost their entire life, attacking any so foolish as to cross into their domain."

Funky damselflies with two main wings and several more vestigial, decorative ones. Four legs, as is normal for FFXIV bugs and its small mandibles look like lil fangs.

A very pretty and elegant insect. Hell yeagh.

Flintbeetle - Hollow Knight: Silksong

"Rarely seen beetle that spends most of its life nestled deep in bone and rock. The Flintgems on its shell excrete an explosive powder. Its bright gems could be used to make beautiful, but short-lived jewellery. An amusing idea for a gift... or a trap."

A large, wingless insect with a glowing gem on its abdomen. It attacks by creating sparks that float in the air before sequentially exploding, making it a dangerous early-game foe.

They only appear during a single quest, never to be seen again afterwards. It is quite sad. Not even a single respawn spot for them in all of Pharloom...

Nimble Bee and Stinging Bee - Kingdom Hearts χ

"This intimidating insect boosts its offense before striking enemies with its steel-like stinger. Bee afraid. Bee very afraid..."

This Heartless seems to have a body like a honey jar with insect wings and a striped stinger/horn. A generic Heartless imp head is inside the jar, wearing goggles. Is it just something driving a vaguely bee-themed vehicle or is that its entire body?

The game calls it a bee and insect but wings aside all it really has going for it is vague theming. This one definitely feels like a stretch.

Von Stoomp - Spore

A big, six-legged spider with another pair of limbs ending in mantis-like claws. Its three vertebrate eyes and fishy mouth make it among the least spider-like spider creatures in the game. The name, alongside its red/orange striped colouration makes Von Stoomp feel like a dedicated Halloween Monster to me.

Mechanically it is a middling carnivore with a level 3 strike attack being its most potent ability. Despite its grand name, Von Stoomp is simply not very strong.

Yeah I think so.

Ladybug Sorceress - FlyKnight

Lady beetle people with two extra pairs of wings in there plus another pair of elytra as waist guards. Technically that's 8 wings, assuming they're not regular waist guards patterned after their elytra.

They can fly and launch bursts of red magic at you, which will remain on the floor as an area hazard for a while. Not too difficult to take down once you get to them, but they can fly away and have a lot of range. Very troublesome if you're already fighting something else or don't have ranged options.

Ashpine Widow and Firebelly Weaver - Flight Rising

"A gnarly, vicious land spider that is more at home on the cooled lava than you are. There is definitely reason for concern." "The chilled webbing emitted by this nasty arachnid is highly flame-retardant. It is not uncommon for weavers to build massive webs above magma vents to catch careless vent-hopping lizards."

Spiky, spiny spiders that live in the Ashfall Waste and the Volcanic Vents. Their abdomens are protected from above by their spiky carapace, but it doesn't seem to cover them entirely - the rest of the abdomen seems soft and vulnerable, though in the Firebelly Weaver's case it also looks like it's glowing with internal heat. They also only have six legs, but that's fairly common in games like this.

Both of these arachnids have fire-resistant silk, no fire-silk shenanigans this time, but aside from that they're quite different. The Ashpine Widow's silk is fairly normal, as its "Singed Webbing" is said to be woven into protective clothing, while the Firebelly Weaver's "Sticky Webbing" forever retains its stickiness and is more useful as an adhesive. I think that's a nice touch.

In my new hit 202X game release you will be able to pet the spiders and little hearts will come out and there will also be a cynophobia toggle to turn all the dogs into featureless blobs that lunge at you vaguely

I had a look at the Satisfactory wiki a while ago and I was super weirded out, because I've never seen a wiki show the arachnophobia mode versions of things by default. You'd have to go out of your way to click an "Arachnophobia Mode Off" button to see the normal, default versions of the creatures creatures.

I get that it's Accommodating, but it seriously sucks how fear and revulsion of arthropods is so normalized and validated compared to pretty much every other kind of phobia.

Imagine your entire existence being deemed to be so repulsive and terrifying that hiding your appearance is expected.

If you got a phobia of dogs, cats, or any kind of more socially accepted animal then you're expected to suck it up, and you're seen as Weird for even considering that censoring a dog in such a way may be warranted. But a spider, or other kind of arthropod? That one's "actually gross", so if you don't hide it then you're being insensitive.

Of course, a real spider won't care, until this kind of mindset gets it killed because it's so normalized to see it as something too repulsive, too gross to be allowed to live anywhere nearby. "Kill it with fire", and all that. Ugh....
