Biography
Violeta Parra was a Chilean singer, composer, folklorist, ethnomusicologist and visual artist. She pioneered the Nueva Canción Chilena (The Chilean New Song), a renewal and a reinvention of Chilean folk music that would extend its sphere of influence outside Chile. She is such a cultural icon that Chilean Musicians' Day is celebrated on her birthday in Chile.
Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval was born on October 4, 1917 in either San Carlos or San Fabián de Alico, Ñuble, Chile. She died on February 5, 1967 in Santiago, Chile, aged 49.
