"Lessing was born in Kermanshah, Iran, on 22 October 1919, to Captain Alfred Tayler and Emily Maude Tayler (née McVeagh), both British subjects. Her father, who had lost a leg during his service in World War I, met his future wife, a nurse, at the Royal Free Hospital where he was recovering from his amputation."[1]
Lessing married first Frank Wilson in 1937. Two children were born to this marriage, John (b. 1939) and Jean (b. 1943). The couple divorced in 1943, after Jean's birth.
Lessing married second Gottfried Lessing in 1944. One child was born to this marriage, Peter (b. 1947). The couple divorced in 1949.
Recognition Lessing received includes: 1992 - Damehood (an offer which she declined) 1999 - Companion of Honour for "conspicuous national service" 1999 - Companion of Literature by the Royal Society of Literature 2001 - David Cohen Prize for lifetime achievement in British literature 2007 - Nobel Prize in Literature 2008 - Ranked #5 on "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945" published by The Times
