One of my favorite games when I was younger was The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It was my introduction to Bethesda as a game developer, and it's a game that I invested nearly 300 hours into during my first playthrough. With that being said, I never got around to playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Friends of mine who have played it have always told me how amazing it is. Despite this, I never went back to give it a chance. Thanks to the release of Oblivion Remastered, I now have the perfect opportunity to give the game a try. I admit that it is a fun game that I totally missed out on, but there are some clear issues it has that I think should be reworked.
4 The character creator
It's a bit horrendous
I am very much a visual person. When you give me the ability to create my own character, I will spend hours making sure that character looks perfect before I jump into any world. This was true for Skyrim, it has been true for the entirety of the Dark Souls series, and it is still true in Oblivion Remastered. When I hit the character creator in the remaster, I was taken aback by how bad it was. While the visuals have clearly been updated, it is also clear that the team did not bother updating the character creator from the original. I managed to make a character I think looks decent, but I wish Bethesda had made the character creator like the ones found in Fallout 4 or Fallout 76.
3 Combat is far too easy
Backpedaling to win
Being new to the game, I started playing on normal difficulty. After all, I didn't want to get overwhelmed during my first playthrough. Unfortunately, the combat has been far too easy to the point where it isn't fun unless I am fighting a horde of foes. Most of the time, I don't even get hit, and I have yet to die by anything other than fall damage from jumping off cliffs by accident.
To clarify, I started using a bow from the beginning. I am not going straight into the memed stealth archer build, but instead a magic archer build. Most of the fights I have gotten involved in have had the same results: the enemy rushes me, I backpedal, and fire arrows until they are dead. Most of the time, the enemies don't even reach me before my arrows fell them. While I can't confirm it, I have heard that the combat gets a major spike in difficulty on anything above normal, which also sounds unfair.
2 Dungeon diving
It isn't what it used to be
I remember running through dungeons in Skyrim, making a mistake, and paying for it. I would get hit by various traps that hurt, and I felt as though they had an impact. Oblivion just doesn't have that same fear factor that Skyrim did when it comes to dungeon diving. I effortlessly run through the dungeons without a care, set off traps, and don't have any consequences. I can't tell you how many traps that has hit me haven't dealt any damage to me. Maybe this is a glitch that isn't supposed to happen, but it's annoying to me that I can just go on my merry way without needing to worry about the consequences of my actions.
1 Dialogue
Not what you think
I actually love the dialogue that I hear from NPCs walking around the streets of the different cities. Talking to the different characters makes me laugh and immerses me in the world. One NPC asked me about the fine for necrophilia, and I died laughing while I told her that I didn't know. The part of the dialogue that I am referring to is the speechcraft. I discovered early on that I could persuade NPCs easily by going into the persuasion menu, selecting the single bar option of each choice, and then going back to the persuasion menu. Doing this makes all the options get color-coated so you can tell which ones are good and which ones are bad to say. This makes getting the highest disposition with each NPC a breeze and takes some of the fun out of the game. I wish that it were a bit more difficult to figure out. I heard that it was more difficult in the original, and I am surprised that Bethesda changed it.
Overall, a great game
As I stated at the beginning of this article, Oblivion is new to me because I missed out on it when I was younger. Getting the chance to visit this classic title, remastered, is amazing. I have had a blast playing it. Unfortunately, no game is perfect, and there are some things about The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered that annoy me. I've heard that Bethesda is taking feedback on the Discord server. Perhaps there will be some changes made in the future to address some of my concerns. If it doesn't happen, it is still a great game.
