Passenger numbers rise on Ring Rail Line to Helsinki Airport

State railroad company VR's Ring Rail Line service to the airport from downtown Helsinki is becoming increasingly popular. While the route was put into use nearly a year ago, completion of the project was delayed for months until work at Helsinki Airport was completed a couple of months ago.

Finland's national airport service company Finavia says that 13 percent of air passengers used the Ring Rail Line to get to the airport during the first quarter of 2016.

Ring Rail Line is a direct train route travels connecting downtown areas of the city to Helsinki Airport in Vantaa and was opened to the public last summer.

However until March of this year, delays to the construction of the escalator system at the actual airport's terminal stop forced train passengers to either walk or take a shuttle bus one stop ahead to reach airport terminals.

Those problems are now behind Finavia and passengers are increasingly choosing to take the train. The company says that airport bus passenger numbers have decreased since the trains started rolling.

To increase tourism in the city, Finavia says that it is trying to entice international travellers to stop in Helsinki rather than to fly directly to their final destinations.
