A partial solar eclipse will darken the sun across Finland next week, the amateur astronomical group Ursa reports.
It said the best viewing opportunities of the event will be in western and northern areas of the country. The celestial event will begin just before 8pm on Wednesday 12 August, depending on the viewer's location.
Up north in Kilpisjärvi, around 85 percent of the sun's diameter will be blocked, while the eclipse will cover 83 percent of the sun to viewers down south in Helsinki.
Ursa noted that people who want to catch a glimpse of the partial eclipse should remember to shield their eyes with special glasses or other methods. Looking at the sun without protection can cause retinal damage within seconds.
The group said ordinary sunglasses do not provide adequate protection. Additionally, eclipse viewers also need to use filters on cameras, binoculars and telescopes.
