源自匈牙利語 cigány，通過法語 tzigane，源自中古希臘語 τσιγγάνος (tsingános，“吉普賽人”)。[1][2][3]與意大利語 zigano/zingaro, 西班牙語 cíngaro, 德語 Zigeuner, 荷蘭語 zigeuner, 葡萄牙語 cigano, 羅馬尼亞語 țigan, 波蘭語 Cygan, 捷克語 Cikán, 俄語 цыган (cygan), 土耳其語 Çingene同源。
