The openSUSE project is a community program sponsored by SUSE Linux and other companies. Promoting the use of Linux everywhere, this program provides free, easy access to openSUSE, a complete Linux distribution. The openSUSE project has three main goals: make openSUSE the easiest Linux for anyone to obtain and the most widely used Linux distribution; leverage open source collaboration to make openSUSE the world's most usable Linux distribution and desktop environment for new and experienced Linux users; dramatically simplify and open the development and packaging processes to make openSUSE the platform of choice for Linux developers and software vendors.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I installed an older version of this and was using it. The randomness of my external Thunderbolt (4 TB) and high-speed USB drives (2 TB) sometimes not appearing after boot was annoying but at least they would work after plugging them back in and sometimes after a restart. The other issue I ran into is that installing the proprietary Nvidia driver took five or six websites, putting various tips from them all together before it would work. After that, once I updated the kernel it would not longer boot until I would go back to the snapshot from before the kernel was updated. My mouse scrollwheel also wouldn't work properly. I was able to run Stability Matrix and ComfyUI with good results (other than the annoying thing of the external USB/TB drives not appearing sometimes). LACT worked fine for reducing the power limit of my 5090.

I switched to Kubuntu to see if it would resolve the issue with the drives appearing. I didn't have any more problems with either drive appearing. I don't remember if the mouse scrollwheel worked or not. Kubuntu was easy as I recall. But, I decided to try the latest Tumbleweed again, using an NVME rather than a SATA drive for the installation.

Well, my 4 TB Corsair Thunderbolt drive will not appear, anywhere. It doesn't show up in the System Settings Thunderbolt area, nor in any of the of lists of devices, nor the partition manager, etc. It's as if the motherboard has no Thunderbolt at all. I tried several CLI commands and installed a CLI program for configuring/checking Thunderbolt. No dice. I tried turning TB on and off again more than once using the System Settings. I tried updating the kernel and everything else. I tried every possibly relevant setting in BIOS. I tried all three ports on the back of the machine. Nope. The 2 TB drive works every time but the 4 TB won't.

One good thing about the current version of Tumbleweed is that I was able to update the kernel this time without it impacting boot. I used a better guide for installing the Nvidia driver (only one webpage needed, some guy's blog) and used the open one for CUDA not the proprietary, having read that the proprietary is now obsolete.

Stability Matrix with ComfyUI is working fine but since my 4 TB drive is important for my AI workload I'm going to have to go back to (boring) Kubuntu. I like the idea of the snapshots but I need the Thunderbolt drive to work. Somewhere I read that the recent Linux kernel might be the problem with Thunderbolt. I wonder if I were to switch back to Kubuntu and update the kernel if that would give me issues. I doubt it, though. Kubuntu seems to simply work.

I'll also say that YAST seems interesting but it seems like there is configuration redundancy between things like it, Discover, System Settings, et cetera. I believe in having a single place for doing any particular important thing (i.e. one for keeping a system updated and one for adjusting system settings). Maybe it's a problem with Linux distros but I fail to see why there should be a bunch of overlapping GUIs/apps (in terms of what they control) interfaces for updating the system and configuring it. Why not have one for updating a system and one for configuring it — with "advanced" portions for power users that newbies can leave hidden? (Do it better than something like VLC which has a very mediocre configuration UI.) The redundancy made me worried that I would cause a problem by configuring something in one screen and not in another, or that making changes in the YAST version might cause bugs with configuration done elsewhere, like System Settings.

I have use most of the "top" distros; Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, NixOS, Gentoo, Void, Artix, Debian. openSUSE Tumbleweed is hands down the best distro I have landed on. The installer makes everything super easy between secure boot, FDE, choosing DE's, SELinux and much more. BTRFS snapshots preconfigured via Snapper removes a large technical barrier for entry and provides real benefit to end users. Zypper is very straightforward to use. You also get the benefit of cutting edge software that's sufficiently tested (Open QA) and zero hassle of versioned releases. YAST is also very nice if you prefer a GUI to access modifications to your OS that are only available through the terminal elsewhere.

If you want an up to date, stable, fully-featured operating system, go Tumbleweed.

I see many reviews with a rating of 2/10 some stating that OpenSUSE is not evolving. They are wrong. OpenSUSE comes with selinux and btrfs-snapshots out of the box, not many distros do that! Also, since when has "not evolving" been bad, its stable, works and I haven't had any issues.

I'm using Tumbleweed on my 16+ year old laptop with KDE 6.7. Works like a charm, despite being old. It feels more snappy than the original windows 7 installation on here.

I have used LOADS of distros, from gentoo to linux mint, to LFS. I haven't really stopped hopping for the last 4 years of using Linux, but I have found the one: OpenSUSE. LFS and gentoo are loads of fun and I would love to have the time and energy to run them on a daily basis, but it just never worked for me. I would also recommend both gentoo and LFS for those that want to learn more about linux and how it actually works.

OpenSUSE is fast, stable and customizable, and it fits all my needs and requires little effort to keep maintained and running.
