I have used Linux systems since around 2008 so am reasonably comfortable with Dual boot & CLI, Arch always ended up with a reasonably quick delete, due to additional workload that was required. However Shelly package manage and CachyOS hello has made this system manageable (especially now AI can so easily troubleshoot problems) The AUR package system is still troublesome, but for a casual user with non complex requirements it works out the box on par, if not in front of DEB & RPM systems. Appimages, & Flatpaks are possibly better integrated. I'd recommend anyone giving this a go, It also has a good support network, ran among the best distros on all the benchmarking I have done & will be on my best distro list for a while I'm sure. However, the out-of-the-box KDE desktop application ecosystem is highly stripped down, requiring extra configuration to become fully functional: * Missing Software Centers: The KDE Discover app store is missing by default and must be installed manually. * Slow AUR Compilation: Popular native apps like Google Chrome and various VPN clients are missing from the main repositories. Users must compile them from the Arch User Repository (AUR), which takes a significant amount of time. * Barebones GNOME Experience: The GNOME desktop environment arrives heavily stripped down, completely lacking essential features like system-wide file searching. The Verdict * Choose CachyOS if: You want a completely hassle-free NVIDIA driver installation and a lightweight starting point. * Skip CachyOS if: You are comfortable installing NVIDIA drivers manually and want a fully featured, ready-to-use KDE or GNOME desktop complete with a native app store. Yes No Version: 260809 Rating: 10 Date: 2026-09-24 Country: United Kingdom Votes: 9 Fast, stable, and packaged with just the right amount of tools to feel feature-complete without any unnecessary bloat. I'd been dipping into, and bouncing off of Linux for 15 years before finding out about CachyOS. I've tried Ubuntu, PopOS, Manjaro, Garuda, Mint etc... and none of them lasted on my machine longer than a week before I reluctantly went crawling back to Windows. CachyOS is to date the ONLY distro to completely sell me on Linux. It took about a month before I realised I hadn't felt the need to boot into Window for anything, and I've been running it happily for half a year now without incident, with no urge to switch back to Windows. All of my hardware works without any fiddling to get things like USB microphones working right, or getting wireless mice to report their battery levels. Great distro. 10/10. Was this review helpful?
