freebsd-15.0 (more screenshots in our gallery)
FreeBSD is a UNIX-like operating system for the i386, amd64, IA-64, arm, MIPS, powerpc, ppc64, PC-98 and UltraSPARC platforms based on U.C. Berkeley's "4.4BSD-Lite" release, with some "4.4BSD-Lite2" enhancements. It is also based indirectly on William Jolitz's port of U.C. Berkeley's "Net/2" to the i386, known as "386BSD", though very little of the 386BSD code remains. FreeBSD is used by companies, Internet Service Providers, researchers, computer professionals, students and home users all over the world in their work, education and recreation. FreeBSD comes with over 20,000 packages (pre-compiled software that is bundled for easy installation), covering a wide range of areas: from server software, databases and web servers, to desktop software, games, web browsers and business software - all free and easy to install.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 24 (407), 6 months: 26 (369), 3 months: 30 (318), 4 weeks: 28 (357), 1 week: 58 (264)

Average visitor rating: 8.6/10 from 86 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

FreeBSD is great if you want a dedicated server OS, but as a desktop OS, I just don't think it's that good.

I've used FreeBSD on and off for custom projects for around 20 years, and honestly, the desktop experience hasn't improved that much. As a server, it's stable and solid. On the desktop, though, it feels pretty dated compared to Linux and other options. A lot of packages are old, some issues have been around forever, and building stuff from ports can be a bit of a gamble. If you don't believe me, try building Chromium from ports with the default settings and see how that goes.

There's also a lot of basic stuff that's either missing or just not very polished. Wi-Fi management can be clunky, GhostBSD's network manager works but isn't amazing, there's no GParted, and Chrome isn't available. Chromium is an option, but it's not really a full replacement since it misses some of Chrome's sync features. With FreeBSD on the desktop, it feels like you're constantly making compromises.

If you enjoy messing with configs, troubleshooting, and fixing things yourself, you'll probably have a good time with it. That's part of the appeal. But if you just want to turn on your computer and get work done, FreeBSD can quickly become more hassle than it's worth.

And yes, I know Netflix, PlayStation, and plenty of web servers run FreeBSD. That's true, but it doesn't really say much about the desktop experience. Those setups are heavily customised and maintained by companies with entire engineering teams behind them. That's very different from installing stock FreeBSD on your desktop.

For desktop use, I'd take Linux any day. There's a much bigger software ecosystem, packages tend to be newer, kernel development moves faster, and the overall desktop experience is just better.

As a desktop OS, I don't think it's a particularly close competition.

I have a ThinkCentre to play with and test Unix like operating systems. And this time I tried FreeBSD on it (as I failed to get NetBSD to result in a bootable system). The install process for FreeBSD is quite straightforward, and the handbook is very well constructed. As a Linux user (Gentoo), things are not that straightforward but close enough to make it achievable.

I opted for Sway after failing to get GDM and Ly working on the system. Sway is working as expected and is generally fine on FreeBSD. But IMHO, you have to be prepared to make some compromises if you want to run FreeBSD as a general-purpose desktop environment. I am happy with FreeBSD as it is on a test PC I do not need for daily use. It is probably my lack of knowledge, but for me, it is not yet ready for my main PC with modern hardware. But I have to say it is fun to play with.

Here's a tighter, more natural-sounding version that keeps the same opinion and tone without feeling overly polished:

FreeBSD is fine as a dedicated server OS, but it's just not a great desktop experience.

I've been using it on and off for custom projects for about 20 years, and honestly, its desktop use case hasn't changed much. It's stable as a server, but on the desktop it feels dated and lags behind pretty much everything else. Packages are often old, long-standing issues remain unresolved, and building from ports is still a gamble. If you don't believe it, try building Chromium from ports with the default settings and see how that goes.

It's also missing a lot of basic quality-of-life features. The available Wi-Fi managers are outdated and clunky, the GhostBSD network manager works but isn't great, there's no GParted, and Chrome isn't available—Chromium isn't a full replacement since it lacks several sync features. With FreeBSD, almost everything feels like a compromise.

If you enjoy tweaking configs and fixing things, you'll probably have fun with it. But if you just want your computer to work so you can get things done, FreeBSD quickly becomes more effort than it's worth in the desktop/workstation sector.

And yes, I know Netflix, PlayStation, and plenty of web servers use FreeBSD. That doesn't really mean much for desktop users. Those are heavily customized versions maintained by companies with dedicated engineering teams, not the stock FreeBSD experience.

For desktop use, Linux simply does everything better. It has a much larger software ecosystem, newer packages, faster kernel development, and a far better overall user experience. As a desktop OS, it's really not a close comparison.
