Peppermint OS

peppermint-2025-10-12 (more screenshots in our gallery)
Peppermint OS is a Debian- and Devuan-based (previously a Lubuntu-based) Linux distribution that aims to be fast and easy on system resources. By employing its Site Specific Browser, Peppermint integrates seamlessly with cloud and web-based applications. The distribution's other features include straight forward updates and easy step-by-step installation using the Calamares installer. The distribution once employed a hybrid LXDE/Xfce desktop environment, mixing LXDE's lxsession with Xfce's panel and application menu. Starting in 2022, Peppermint OS shifted to using the Xfce desktop, dropping the LXDE components.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

installed Peppermint OS (debian, Trixie) to replace broken/unrepairable Linux Lite 7.0 on Fujitsu Esprimo 1500 PC (Pentium dual-core E5400, 2.7GHz, which is 20 - twenty - years old): very impressed, no problems with installation (from a CD, not even a USB), very straightforward, installer found video/audio/keyboard/mouse/ethernet without any problems, did not take long to get the basic system installed first-time (!!) and ready to go. Once installed, OS boots relatively quickly (certainly compared to Lite and Mint, which I have used in the past), and runs fast and smoothly, and does not suck all the memory or processor. Choice of Xfce for the desktop is a good one, easy and intuitive to tweak and use, and runs very smoothly without any display problems.

Obviously, as others have rightly said, you have to make more effort after installation to download basic software and create a complete system, certainly more effort compared to Lite or AntiX-23 (which I happily run on two old laptops) but it's not really that difficult, and some people even enjoy getting into a real personalisation of the system. Users new to Linux and particularly sudo will need some extra time to get to grips with it all, but the documentation necessary to create a complete and fully-personalised OS is easily available, and if you are going to use Linux for any length of time, you have to learn those principles anyway, sooner or later.

If you are willing to take the extra hour to learn how to play with the system (the Suggested programs feature is a nice touch), identify what you need and then set it all up, this is a very good choice of OS.

Really appreciate the Simple Update shortcut, if only all Linux distros had something similar.
So far, totally made up with my choice of Peppermint, thanks, now I can get another five years life out of my PC!

This is not a bad little operating system. It has a few issues and it's not hardware related. It actually runs very smooth. I think it would qualify as a Libre/Free OS or also known as fsf friendly. I can't find anything that isn't open source besides maybe a browser you can install or two. It's about as Linux as you can truly get.

Now with that being said, let me get into the downsides of it and there are a few. That's why it gets 9 out of 10. It has main problems that a new user to Linux will not know how to fix or do. One of the problems is it isn't a full operating system. It gives you some basic tools and you have to build on it from there. You get a browser, Gdebi package installer and basically everything you need to make an operating system. It has printer support and general stuff. But it has no video player. No music player. Not even a document client or even a notepad. It does have a calculator. You will have to build your own Linux OS fully. It's a good thing for me though. I actually like that about it.

So what's the takeaway from all this. Well, this Linux version will entirely depend on you and what you like. It will also depend on your skill level. It doesn't even have an updater or firewall installed. You can really plan on building it for yourself. But for those of us who actually likes to build their own version, then we love it and it's very easy on low end resources.

I used the Devuan variant of Peppermint.

The dedalus version was excellent so was excited to get the excalibur version when it was released.

Unfortunately this version is not the best.

The developer has stripped out firmware packages that are available in excalibur resulting behaviour that is questionable.

On AMD chipsets, ryzen 5 specifically, I found that the init returned and error trying to load the amdgpu. This meant plymouth would not load and took me to cli when I tried to load the iso from usb.

On intel chipsets, the iwifi was completely missing altogether which I found very strange.

I had none of these issues on the dedalus release and why firmware was present on excalibur but removed from peppermints latest version I cannot tell you.

The developer is a real nice person and was extremely engaging but the issues remain and the iso's remain unchanged on sourceforge.

I feel the iso's were released prematurely and I also got the feeling that the developer struggled to get the devuan spin ready for ga due to the length of time it took from the devuan release.

I did not install it due to the functionality issues I encountered.

I tried to install the previous version but that just installed broken like it had not been maintained which corresponds to a previous post below.
