It's a stabilized Debian-SID base with packages pulled in from Cachy and Nobara (the devs are collaborators on each too). Nothing against the other distros but I'm partial to Debian in general, so having its backbone is super comfortable to me. Works out of the box, and their NVIDIA Driver support and GNOME implementation is fantastic. The upgrade manager is particularly helpful too for managing both the apt and flatpack packages! I've tried Cachy and Nobara, which are also gaming focused, but the overarching toolset the PikaOS team provides is a huge plus. Was this review helpful? I’m a computer engineer, and for a couple of years now, I’ve used Linux exclusively—both at home (for gaming) and at work. Once I discovered CachyOS, it was unbeatable for me; however, I was never a fan of Arch due to its aggressive and constant update model. So, I started trying out distributions based on Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and so on. Some were better, some worse, but few came close to CachyOS's performance—until I discovered PikaOS. It didn't just match that performance; it actually improved upon it slightly, offering more features out of the box and the best GNOME experience I’ve ever had. I love this distribution; it combines the best of Debian and CachyOS, along with some valuable extras from the PikaOS team. For me, it’s an 11 out of 10! Was this review helpful? It feels like a modern, performance-focused Debian/Ubuntu-based distribution that is clearly designed for desktop users/linux gamers. One of the biggest strengths of PikaOS is how up-to-date it is. The kernel, NVIDIA drivers, Mesa stack, and many desktop packages are much newer than what you normally get on standard debian-based distros. For users with newer hardware, this is a major advantage. Hardware support was good on my machine, and the KDE desktop felt fast and responsive. I also like that PikaOS does not come with an excessive amount of preinstalled software. The default installation feels relatively clean and focused, which I prefer over distributions that include many administration tools or applications that normal desktop users may never use. Another advantage is that it keeps the familiar APT/Debian ecosystem while adding newer packages and performance optimizations. This makes it attractive to users who want something more cutting-edge than Debian/Ubuntu but do not want to move to Arch Linux family. My main concerns are the relatively small development team and the long-term sustainability of the project. The default visual design, especially the wallpapers, is also not really to my taste, although that is easy to change. Overall, PikaOS is a surprisingly polished distribution.
