Thailand will enforce a nationwide alcohol ban on Sunday, 31 May, as the country observes Visakha Bucha Day, one of the most important dates in the Buddhist calendar.
The ban lasts for 24 hours, from midnight to midnight, and prohibits the sale of alcohol at convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants, entertainment venues, nightlife businesses, events and any activities involving the sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages.
While some entertainment zones have received limited exemptions, alcohol sales at convenience stores and supermarkets remain strictly prohibited. Most bars and restaurants are also expected not to serve alcohol on Sunday.

Visakha Bucha Day marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Lord Buddha, and is regarded as the most significant and sacred day in the Buddhist calendar.
Violations of the alcohol ban can carry penalties of up to six months in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.
Monday, 1 June, is also a public holiday in Thailand, while 30 May is also a holiday, making it a long weekend across the country.
Anyone planning to go out over the weekend is advised to take note of the alcohol ban on Sunday.
