Thai Immigration reminds foreign nationals about visa overstay rules

Thai visa overstay rules have been highlighted again by Thai Immigration, which is reminding foreign nationals in Thailand to check their permitted stay date carefully and avoid overstaying.

Under immigration rules effective from 20 March 2016, overstaying can result in fines, prosecution and re-entry bans.

For those who report voluntarily before being arrested:

  • Overstay of more than 90 days: 1-year ban
  • Overstay of more than 1 year: 3-year ban
  • Overstay of more than 3 years: 5-year ban
  • Overstay of more than 5 years: 10-year ban

For those arrested and prosecuted:

  • Overstay of up to 1 year: 5-year ban
  • Overstay of more than 1 year: 10-year ban

Foreign nationals are advised to extend their visa or leave Thailand before their permission to stay expires.
