Project Runeberg's editions of Strindberg's works have been
unorganized and somewhat chaotic, primarily depending on the available
editions and their special copyright conditions. August Strindberg
died in 1912, which is more than 70 years ago, so his works are no
longer covered by copyright. We currently (1999) have no definite
plan for what to publish, but the easiest solution seems to be the
1912--1921 set of 55 volumes, excluding the commentary.
The Swedish publishing house Bonniers in 1912--1921 issued a 55
volume set of his collected works (Samlade skrifter) with a
commentary by John Landquist (1881-1974).
This commentary, obviously, is still covered by copyright. In 1964 an
index to this collection was published (Register till August
Strindbergs Samlade skrifter 1-55, 1912-1919, by Lundensiska
litteratursällskapet). In 1987, Bonniers published a facsimile
edition of the 55 volume set.
In 1918--1920, Strindberg's collected unprinted works (Samlade
otryckta skrifter) were published in 2 volumes.
Starting in 1981, Stockholm University (litteraturvetenskapliga
institution med Lars Dahlbäck, born 1938)
in cooperation with the competing Swedish publishing house Norstedts
issues a "national edition" (Nationalupplagan) of Strindberg's
collected works. This set is still uncompleted (volume 65 in 1997).
Attempts have been made to make this edition freely available on the
Internet, but this is in conflict with Norstedts' commercial
interests.
Strindberg's letters are collected in original at the Royal Library
in Stockholm, and have appeared in 20 printed volumes (10,000 letters
to more than 600 recipients 1857--1912) published by
Strindbergsällskapet and Bonniers.
Samlade skrifter, 55 vol., 1912--1921
As mentioned above, Bonnier's published the first posthumous
edition of Strindberg's collected works (Samlade skrifter) in
55 volumes 1912--1921.

Early Translations
The chance of publishing English (and maybe French and German)
translations of Strindberg's works on the Internet depends on the
availability of early translations, that have entered the public
domain. In Swedish copyright law, this means the translator must have
died more than 70 years ago.
