ETRSS 1

ETRSS 1 [CAST]

The ETRSS 1 (Ethiopian Remote Sensing Satellite) remote sensing satellite is Ethiopia's first satellite, which will provide data on changes in climate and weather-related phenomena that would be utilized for the country's key targets in agriculture, forestry as well as natural resources protection initiatives.

ETRSS 1 is a 65 kg multi-spectral wide-angle remote sensing satellite developed and built by CAST. It is operated by the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute in Addis Ababa. It can obtain multi-spectral optical remote sensing data in the fields of agriculture, forestry, water conservancy, disaster prevention and mitigation, and provide data support for China and Egypt to carry out research on climate change.

Launch took place in December 2019 as a secondary payload on a CZ-4B rocket. In August 2020 commercial sales of imagery from ETRSS-1 has begun.
