Jam-e Jam 1

Jam-e Jam 1 is the first Iranian geostationary communications satellite owned by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and internationally registered under the name Iran DBS.

The satellite serves to secure and utilize frequency filings registered with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at the 34° East orbital position. Available information indicates that it is primarily intended to bring into use the assigned spectrum as a regulatory placeholder for a later operational direct-broadcasting satellite. It may precede a larger, fully operational system, possibly the satellite known by its Russian name Ekvator 1.

Jam-e Jam 1 was built in Russia; no detailed technical specifications have been published. The launch vehicle selection suggests a relatively small spacecraft, consistent with frequency-protection and limited broadcast infrastructure missions rather than a high-power direct-to-home broadcasting satellite.

The satellite was inserted into geostationary orbit at 34° East longitude. Following launch, it is expected to undergo orbit-raising and stabilization maneuvers over a period of approximately three weeks before entering operational service. According to Iranian press reports, its transmissions are not intended for direct household reception but are focused on institutional and broadcast infrastructure applications.

Jam-e Jam 1 was launched as a secondary payload in February 2026 on a Proton-M rocket.
