Longxia Yan 1 (Lobster Eye 1) []

Longxia Yan 1 or Lobster Eye 1 (also called Longxia Yan X Shexian 1 or Lobster Eye X-ray Exploration Satellite) is a small satellite developed by Nanjing University and Hong Kong University to demonstrate a Lobster-Eye”focused X-ray detector.

The satellite is a joint project of Nanjing University (NJU), the Laboratory for Space Research (LSR) of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), and Shanghai ASES Spaceflight Technology Co. Ltd.

The Lobster-Eye X-ray optics use microchannel plates as a sort of X-ray equivalent of optical fibers to make a very wide field image of the X-ray sky. This X-ray imaging technology was first proposed in the 1970s, with advantages of large field-of-view, small size, light weight and easy assembly, etc., making it highly suitable for space payload applications.

Longxia Yan 1 was launched in July 2020 as a co-passenger with ZY-3 03 on a CZ-4B rocket.
