Mesolite from
Pashan quarries, Pashan, Pune District, Pune Division, Maharashtra, India

Locality type:Quarry
Classification
Species:Mesolite
Formula:Na2Ca2Si9Al6O30 · 8H2O
Comments:High-quality mesolites are notably abundant in the Pashan area of Pune. These mesolites are often found in large, ball-shaped formations within Heulandite cavities. They appear in impressive sizes and massive clusters, with some of the world's largest mesolite clusters discovered here. The specimens are typically unearthed at construction sites and roadcuts, where their striking, spherical sprays become evident.

Habit:The mesolites are formed in a ball-shaped cluster, each crystal being a long elongated needle. All of the needles merge to a single point, creating ball-like sprays. Each needle has a square top. It is usually found in Heulandite Cavities, along with stilbites, and apophyllites.
Colour:The mesolite here comes in colors of white, transparent, and orange
Luminescent properties:None
Quality for species:Excellent - world class for species or very significant. (!!)
Significance:Classic locality for this mineral (see references.)
Special Storage/
Display Requirements:
The needles are extremely brittle thus keeping them supported on the matrix, i.e. heulandite. If there is no matrix, add an artificial support such as epoxy, mineral tack, vetra, etc. This will protect the sprays.
