Siderite from
Coulee City Marina, Coulee City, Grant County, Washington, USA

Classification
Species:Siderite
Formula:FeCO3
Comments:Lustre - sub-vitreous, silky likely weathered surfaces
Color - Yellowish orange
Streak - white
Hardness - > 3 - < 4 presumed about 3.5
Cleavage - not tested (previous breaks appear to have good cleavage but since this is a crystal mass tests on individual crystals was not attempted)
Brittle, breaks fairly easily and appears to have an irregular break on individual crystals
Solubility - No reaction in cold HCl. Effervesces in hot acid and shows a distinct orange halo around the mineral. Complete dissolution in a few hours with no residue.
This specimen was discussed at length in Mindat ID forum. It was believed to be stilbite but the complete dissolution (lack of silica gel residue) and the orangeish 'halo' around the piece as it dissolved (believed to be iron residue) showed this not to be stilbite. That coupled with the dirth of zeolite materials in the Columbia Flood Basalts show this to be siderite.
Habit:acicular (globular) platy looking with individual crystals curved (see photo)
Colour:Yellowish orange
Luminescent properties:Not tested
Quality for species:Good crystals or rich for species - important (!)
Abundance at site:Rare
