Calcite from
Coulee City Marina, Coulee City, Grant County, Washington, USA

Classification
Species:Calcite
Formula:CaCO3
Comments:Lustre - waxy, pearly
Color - yellowish (translucent)
Streak - white
Hardness - ~3
Cleavage - none attempted
Fracture - none attempted but along existing break lines appears brittle and sub-conchoidal (see photo)
Solubility - effervesces readily even with common household vinegar (did not test further for total solubility)
Combination of tests and physical habit show this to be calcite. There is a dirth of zeolite material from the Columbia Flood Basalts which further leads one to a determination of calcite.
This specimen was well discussed on a Mindat ID thread. It was thought that it was 'most likely' Stilbite on prehnite with sphalerite. Chemical testing showed the outer material to dissolve slowly, releasing some effervescence, in hot HCl, but showed no effervescing reaction in cold HCl. No silica gel was noted after completely dissolving. The inner crystal reacted instantly to cold HCl bubbling vigorously and was much too soft to be prehnite. That, coupled with the dirth of zeolites within the Columbia Flood Basalts, shows that this is most likely siderite, which I believe to be a good ID, while the inner globular crystal is most likely calcite.
