About Mavinite
Formula:
near (Mg,Fe)3(Al,Fe)12Si7O35 · 9H2O
A poorly understood term, apparently only used for green micaceous material occurring with ruby in the Mysore district, India. It was originally described as a brittle mica by Rao (1946) but analyses indicated a hydrous Mg-Aluminosilicate which lacked Ca and alkalis. It was listed as âprobably a chloriteâ by Fleischer (1947). Hey (1955) suggested it might be âeither a brittle mica or a chloritoidâ but somehow Spencer (1949) described it as âAn intermediate between "xanthophyllite" (= clintonite) and chloritoidâ, chemically and structurally nonsensical but repeated by Clark (1993). It needs modern analysis and the name should be avoided.
Originally described from Mavinhalli, Mysore, Karnataka, India.
