Mossite

Name:
After the locality Berg which is located near the town of Moss, Norway.
Originally described by Brøgger (1897) as a new mineral from a granite pegmatite at Berg, Råde, Østfold, Norway.

Dunn et al (1979) showed the type material to be a mixture of "Ta-bearing ferrocolumbite and tapiolite". Tetragonal crystals measured by Brøgger (1897,1906) but not chemically analysed, are to be considered as tapiolite (Raade 1996).
The term is used also for a hypothetical Nb-dominant end-member of the Ixiolite family, (Nb,Fe)4O8, with disordered cation distribution.
