Usually granular diopside forming monomineral zones in magnesium skarns in some regions of Prebaikalie. Nature of blue colouration is uneven.

The blue color of synthetic blue diopside is associated with the stabilization of a small portion of the total Cr as Cr(IV) within the diopside structure (Schreiber, 1977).
