Named by Francesco Demartin, Carlo Maria Gramaccioli, Italo Campostrini, and C. Castellano in 2011 in honor of Alfonso Cossa (3 November 1833, Milan, Italy - 23 October 1902, Turin, Italy), for his work on the minerals and rocks of Vulcano.

General Appearance of Type Material:
Stout prismatic crystals up to 0.1 mm in size, which are terminated by rhombohedral faces.
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
Reference Collection of the Dipartimento di Chimica Strutturale e Stereochimica Inorganica at the Universita degli Studi di Milano, Italy (catalogue No. 2009-1).
Geological Setting of Type Material:
Cossaite was found on altered pyroclastic breccia at the F5AT medium-temperature fumarole (T ~350ºC), which is located at the rim of La Fossa crater.
