A descriptive term for finely crystalline (grains having diameters between 5 and 15 microns) microscopically transparent or translucent, interstitial component of limestone, consisting of clean, relatively coarse-grained calcite or less commonly aragonite, that either recrystallised from micrite that accumulated during deposition or was introduced later into porous sediments as a cement. It is more coarsely crystalline than micrite, and finer than sparite.
