A tonalite with an M' colour index of greater than 40.
Depending on the mafic content the melatonalite field ranges from:
2-24% quartz
8-32% plagioclase
up to 1% K feldspar or albite (usually the latter)
40-90% mafic minerals (amphiboles, pyroxenes, biotite)

Mineralogy of Melatonalite
Essential minerals - these are minerals that are required within the classification of this rock:
| Feldspar > Plagioclase | (Na,Ca)[(Si,Al)AlSi2]O8 |
| Silica > Quartz | SiO2 |
Non-essential minerals - these minerals are common, sometimes major components, but are not always present:
| Amphibole | (Na, K, ◻)(Ca,Na)2(Mg,Fe,Al)5((Si,Al)8O22)(OH,F,Cl,O)2 |
