A fine grained, granoblastic contact-metamorphic rock formed from a basaltic dyke rock metamorphosed by contact with gabbroic magma.
The term beerbachite was coined by in the late 19th century and applied to fine granular two-pyroxene-plagioclase-magnetite (ilmenite) dike rocks with a saccaroid texture found in the Odenwalde gabbro intrusion in Germany. The Odenwalde beerbachite was later reinterpreted as metamorphic sedimentary inclusions of a mafic composition rather than dikes as hornfels derived from mafic igneous protoliths.
