Unnamed (Iron Nitride II)

This page is currently not sponsored. Click here to sponsor this page.
Formula:
Fe2N
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Another Fe nitride after the already known species: roaldite and siderazot.

Found as elongated inclusions, 8-10 microns in size, within lower-mantle diamond. May be intergrown with its replacement graphite. The individual grains are 0.5-1.5 microns in size.

Co-described with associated 'Unnamed (Iron Carbonitride)', 'Unnamed (Iron Nitride I)', 'Unnamed (Iron Carbide)', silicon carbide (possibly moissanite), Mn-rich xieite, and other oxide(s). Other, earlier phases coexisting, are nyerereite, nahcolite, calcite, and periclase.

The phase is among a solid solution(s) thay may be described as M5(C,N)3 - M23(C,N)6, with M/(C,N) ratio in the 1.65 to 3.98 range.

Likely formed due to infiltration of liquid metal (with some lighter elements), coming from the outer core to the D" layer.
