Originally defined as a volcanic rock consisting of abundant pyroxene and some nepheline but with no olivine. Now commonly used for undersaturated basic and ultrabasic volcanic rocks consisting of abundant augite phenocrysts in a groundmass of indeterminate mineralogy.
