All-Time Table
The Ehrenliga Saarland was first played in the 1947/48 season as a feeder to the Oberliga Sdwest.
Due to the political situation after the end of the second World War, the regional federation had obtained independent FIFA membership in 1947, and after the 1947/48 season, football in the region was separated completely from that in Germany. The four Saar clubs in the Oberliga, 1.FC Saarbrcken (2nd in 1947/48 behind Kaiserslautern), VfB Neunkirchen (4th, scoring more than 100 goals in 26 matches), SV Saar 05 Saarbrcken (9th) and SV Vlklingen (11th) were forced to join the second tier Ehrenliga, from that moment on the top level league for all clubs from this FIFA member association.
1.FC Saarbrcken refused to enter the league (to them entirely uninteresting from a competitive point of view), but their second team joined Neunkirchen, Saar 05 and Vlklingen to form the 1948/49 Ehrenliga together with Homburg, Sportfreunde Saarbrcken, Ensdorf, Halberg-Brebach, Merchweiler, Pttlingen, Ludweiler and Dudweiler (who had finished, in that order, in the top-8 of the Ehrenliga 1947/48) and the two promoted sides Marpingen and Merzig (while SC Blieskastel and Viktoria Hhnerfeld went down).

Meanwhile, 1.FC Saarbrcken played hors concours in the French Division 2 1948/49, and after being refused renewed entry for 1949/50 they organised the Saarlandpokal in 1949/50 and 1950/51, to which various foreign clubs were invited. VfB Neunkirchen joined them as hosts of the Saarlandpokal in 1950/51.

Starting from the 1951/52 season, the Saar league was incorporated
into the German league structure as a second level regional league
(under the Oberliga Sdwest);
1.FC Saarbrcken joined the Oberliga Sdwest itself, won it with
6 points to spare, and went all the way to the final of the 
(West) German championship which they lost to VfB Stuttgart).
