New releases of the Scala IDE for Eclipse

There is plenty of activity going on in the development of the Scala IDE for Eclipse. At this time, a new release candidate is available for the next point release in the 2.0 series: the Scala IDE for Eclipse 2.0.2 RC1 is ready for download, including many bug fixes. At the same time, the Scala IDE developers have made available a new milestone in the upcoming 2.1 release: a new Scala IDE for Eclipse 2.1 Special Edition is available, now including support for the recently release Scala 2.10.0 Milestone 4. In addition, a new nightly build is available, targeting the upcoming Eclipse 4.2 (Juno). Kudos to the Scala IDE for Eclipse developers for their hard work! You can find below their release notes.

A few days back the Scala IDE team released an early preview of the Scala IDE V2.1 for Eclipse, based on the new milestone (M3) for the upcoming Scala 2.10. This release has all the new features in the Scala IDE M1, plus a few minor changes needed in order to support 2.10.

Today we released an early preview of the Scala IDE V2.1 for Eclipse! While the goal of V2.0 was to provide a reliable environment for your Scala coding, with V2.1 we want to bring your Scala development experience to a whole new level.

In this milestone there are a whole lot of new features for you to try out: implicit highlight, move refactoring, scala debugger and semantic highlight are the most exciting ones. If you are like us, once you start using them you will no longer be able go back. They are simply too addictive!

We are very happy to announce a new release candidate for the next maintenance release of the Scala
IDE for Eclipse: Scala IDE 2.0.1 RC2 is available now!

The only change with respect to 2.0.1 RC1 is the bundled Scala version, which is now Scala 2.9.2-RC2.

What is new in 2.0.1?

Builder, Compiler and Editor improvements. And both Eclipse 3.6 (Helios) and Eclipse 3.7 (Indigo) are now officially supported! Read more...

Your Summer of Code 2012 with Scala

This year the Scala team will apply for the third time for Google Summer of Code program to work with enthusiastic students on challenging Scala projects and got accepted again! During Summer of Code 2010 and 2011 many successful projects were developed and we want to continue it. Google invites students to come up with interesting, non-trivial problems for their favourite open-source projects, and work on them over the summer. Aside from the satisfaction of solving challenging problems, students get paid for their work.

We have collected a list of project ideas for you; we expect students to explore these ideas in much more detail, adding their own suggestions and plans on how to proceed. We are always eager to hear about any other ideas but before applying we suggest discussing them on our mailing list. Find all the details about Scala and the Google Summer of Code on this page. The deadline for student applications is 6th of April!

Typesafe Stack 2.0 released

This is interesting to Scala developers because there is now an integrated stack comprising the latest versions of Scala, the Akka concurrency middleware and the Play web framework. Everything is integrated to work with each other, which makes it easy to build scalable web applications out of the box. While the Scala version has been kept stable, there's a lot of innovation in the layers above it.

Scala, Lift and Cloud Foundry

OpenCredo releases WebTrader, a product targetted at SME's, based on Scala, Lift and Cloud Foundry. By using this technolgy base Russ Miles, CEO of OpenCredo says "We have reliably reduced our turnaround (develop-stage-demo-to-production) cycles by easily a factor of 10."

Akka 2.0 Released!

Akka 2.0 Released! "A revolutionary step in programming for concurrency, fault-tolerance and scalability."

According to Jonas Bonér the Akka team has built on the experiences of the Akka 1 series and "moved to the next level — resilience by default, scale up and out by configuration, extensibility by design and with a smaller footprint."

Akka 2.0 represents a major step forward for concurrent programming using Scala or Java. Akka 2.0 has many new features to make the task easier for the developer, including Supervision and Death Watch, Paths and Addresses, Location Transparency, Event Bus, Improvements to Akka Futures, Much Improved Performance and Scalability. This milestone includes the following fixes and improvements:

Support for implementing a parallel collection using a concurrent collection. In particular, one should be able to implement a combiner using a concurrent (thread-safe) collection.
Ctries added to the standard library. Implement parallel ctries using the above mechanism.
New futures and promises library added to scala.concurrent, joint work with the Akka team.
Numerous improvements to reification.
Virtual pattern matcher improvements -- please try compiling your project with -Yvirtpatmat, it will be on by default starting with 2.10.0-M3!
A significantly faster optimizer.
Improvements to RedBlack tree.
Fixes to specialization (AnyRef, interaction of final and @inline -- thank you, Erik Osheim!).
