Science is the Discipline of Unhappiness
- Science has replaced Religion as the source of knowledge
- The rational has replaced the irrational
- Empirical observation has replaced common sense
- Science won
- But science is giving us a sad world, a world in which we are not special at all, and in which there is no afterlife
- What is the point of explaining the universe if it makes us unhappy to be alive in it?
- A purpose of science is not only to explain the universe but to use that knowledge to improve our lives and make us happier; but the result, no matter how many luxuries science creates for us and how better our material conditions become, is to make us less happy to be alive
- The next scientific project should be one that maximizes not our knowledge of the structure of the universe but our happiness to be alive in this universe
