Flamingo 1

Flamingo 1 [Vyoma]

Flamingo 1Flamingo-1 is a German Space Domain Awareness satellite built by EnduroSat for the startup Vyoma. It is an ESPA-class spacecraft intended for surveillance of objects in low Earth orbit.

The mission objective of Flamingo-1 is the collection of Space Domain Awareness data focused on artificial objects in low Earth orbit. The satellite is intended to support the detection, tracking, and cataloging of space debris and operational spacecraft, complementing existing space situational awareness datasets.

Vyoma’s approach combines space-based sensors with data obtained from third-party ground telescope networks. Ground-based optical systems used by Vyoma can observe low Earth orbit objects down to approximately six centimeters in size under favorable atmospheric and geometric conditions, using dedicated tracking techniques.

The longer-term mission goal is to enable the tracking of objects as small as one centimeter in low Earth orbit. Such objects are currently below the practical detection threshold of existing tracking systems. A space-based architecture avoids atmospheric interference and enables continuous monitoring through semi-autonomous operations.

Flamingo-1 was manufactured by EnduroSat, a satellite integrator specializing in small spacecraft platforms. The satellite uses an optical payload designed for surveillance applications, optimized for observation of resident space objects in low Earth orbit.

The spacecraft is based on an ESPA-class small satellite platform. It carries an optical telescope payload intended for debris and object detection. Further details on mass, power, and orbital parameters have not been disclosed.

Flamingo-1 serves as a pilot satellite for a planned Vyoma constellation. The company plans a phased deployment beginning in 2025, with a target constellation of 12 satellites by 2026.
