Himawari 10 [MELCO]

The Japanese Ministry of Transport Civil Aviation Bureau & Meteorological Agency ordered in 2023 a replacement geostationary meteorological satellite, Himawari-10, from MELCO.

The Himawari-10 is a successor to the Himawari-8 and Himawari-9. The satellite is designed to remain in service for 16 years or more.

Himawari-10 will be equipped with a visible infrared imager and a hyperspectral infrared sounder, both built by L3 Harris Technologies of the United States, and a space environment sensor from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology of Japan (NICT).

The satellite carries following payloads:

  • GHMS (Geostationary HiMawari Sounder) to provide information about the vertical distribution of atmospheric moisture, winds, and temperature to feed into forecast models. It is an interferometer measuring in the thermal IR (680 - 1095 cm-1) and one mid IR band (1689 - 2250 cm-1). Both bands measured at high spectral resolution around 0.75 cm-1 or better with spectral sampling 0.625 cm-1.
  • GHMI (Geostationary HiMawari Imager) is a multi-purpose imagery for nowcasting, NWP assimilation and environment monitoring. Wind derivation by tracking clouds and water vapour features. It is an 18 channel radiometer in VIS, NIR, SWIR, MWIR and TIR part of spectrum.
  • RMS (Radiation Monitors for Space weather) to measures solar particles: protons, alpha particles and electrons im following spectral bands: 1-500 MeV (protons); 8-390 MeV (alpha particles); >2 MeV (electrons)
  • DCS (Data Collection Service) for data collection from in-situ Data Collection Platforms. Transponder of messages from Data Collection Platforms, either self-timed or upon interrogation
