Omani IRSS-1 []

Omani IRSS-1, also known by its Chinese designation Oman Zhineng Yaogan 1 (Oman AI Remote Sensing 1), is an Earth observation and artificial intelligence demonstration satellite built for the Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman. The satellite was developed by Deweier Kongjian (also known as Star Vision), a Chinese aerospace manufacturer based in Chengdu, and is based on the Chinese Diwei Zhineng Yingji 1 satellite platform.

The Omani IRSS-1 satellite forms part of a bilateral collaboration between Oman and China in the field of space and advanced technologies. The project is a significant milestone for Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), marking the first time an Omani academic institution directly participates in the development of a national satellite mission.

Omani IRSS-1 is equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms designed to process remote sensing data on board. The satellite’s primary mission is to perform AI-based maritime surveillance, specifically focusing on the identification of shipping vessels in Omani territorial waters. This capability is intended to support environmental monitoring and the protection of Oman’s marine ecosystem.
