| | awake | ] | Hey guys.. I'm going to be moving to Akron sometime in August, to attend graduate school. I've been trying to check out some apartments online in the area/within a decent travel distance. I know a little, but not much about the Akron area, as I spent very little time there during my visit and back when I marched Drum Corps with the Bluecoats when I was 18.
What apartment complexes and areas should I avoid? Also, do any of you have any recommendations? Looking for a decent place that allows cats, for around $400-$500 a month. May or may not consider finding a roommate.
Also, anyone attend U of A? |

| | curious | ] | Hi all! I am currently living in Cleveland with my family, however recent events have inspired us to consider a move to the Akron area. The slight snag to this idea is that neither my husband nor myself are familiar with the Akron area. So I turn to you wonderful people. Tell me about Akron and/or Canton. Where's the "family-friendly" neighborhoods? What areas aren't so great? Is there a general "this side of the city good, that side not so much" distinction like in Cleveland? Are the schools good? Do they have good gifted programs/special needs programs? Is there decent public transportation? Any other nifty things two non-mainstream almost 30-somethings with two young children should know about?
My husband works in Brecksville, so we're looking for somewhere that would be a half-hour drive for him, no more than an hour at the most. I don't drive at all, so I'd like to find a place that isn't out in the boonies and has fairly decent bus access. And of course we want a neighborhood that we feel safe letting our kids go out in the yard to play.Any recommendations/advice would be much appreciated. |

This site is a food review site that you, the college student, add reviews to. What's so special about it? We list by price and proximity to the school, as well as a forum where you can express your dining critique with other students from around the nation.

Oh yeah, did I mention? We're based right here in Akron (hence why U of A has the college id of 1. FEAR THE ROO!) |

Akron is the #5 best place in the whole country to educate your child! I didn't grow up here, so this was quite a surprise to me. Good news, too, as I have two boys. What are your experiences in the private and public education sectors here? |

| Discount Movie Theaters |

Hi All, Are there any discount movie theaters in the Akron/Fairlawn area? Preferrably not too ghetto? I'm moving to Fairlawn next week and I'm not really familiar with the area. I'm originally from the Youngstown area, which has a pretty nice Cinemark theater with $2 movies. On the other hand, when I lived in Orlando, the only cheap theater was literally falling apart and the bathrooms were disgusting. I was kind of afraid to go there. Thanks! |

| Help oppose Ohio's anti-choice Bill |

A proposed law in Ohio would force women to get the father's consent before they can terminate a pregnancy. This could mean forced childbirth, including for victims of rape and incest, as well as delays which could endanger women's health and lives. (Read about the Bill here.)
Help fight the proposed law by taking one of the steps listed below, and by reposting this information to your blog.
If you are in Ohio or the US: Send the co-sponsors of this bill and any of your representatives, photocopied articles written by abuse and rape survivors. Or, you can tell them your own story, or that of a friend who is a survivor. You don't have to use names. Tell them how you feel about this bill, H.B. 287, and in particular the fact that women would be required to present a police report or a paternity test in order to prove their pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.
[Full text of the bill is here]
If you're not in the US, send email. Tell them where you're from and why you're emailing them. Or send a postcard.
( Co-sponsors' addresses:Collapse )
You can find your local representative in Ohio by going here and entering your zip+4. |

Are you--or your high school student-- preparing for the Ohio Graduation Test?
I am a Senior level English Education major with over ten years experience in writing, editing, and tutoring. I am currently accepting high school students in need of assistance developing writing skills, specifically in preparation for such standardized assessments as the SAT, ACT, and Ohio Graduation Test. Working one on one with your student, I can provide effective writing strategies that he or she will be able to apply in high school, college, and beyond.
I offer excellent rates. My hour-long sessions run for 6 weeks, at $25 an hour*. That's roughly half of what the local tutoring businesses charge!
For more information, or to schedule a personal tutoring program, please reply to this post or e-mail me to discuss your needs. I would be happy to meet with you, and look forward to hearing from you.
Lauren
for.writing.help@gmail.com *This rate applies to students within the Copley-Fairlawn school system. For residents outside this area, additional charges may apply.
