Hey all,
I was wondering if any of you out there wanted (or knew of someone else) to sublease a one bedroom apartment? I got a new job in DSM and I want out of my lease ASAP. It's also available immediately. The lease runs to the standard July 31, 2009 date.
The apartment is on the north side of Ames near Cub Foods and Walmart. It's 624 sq ft, (pretty big!) $505/month, includes all utilities except electric, which is about $20/month (and heat is free). It's also pet friendly (but the landlord doesn't allow dogs), has a garbage disposal, dishwasher, balcony (it's a third floor apt.), carpet, central air, laundry in building, extra storage space, and even a bike room in the apartment to store your bike in. The building is also controlled access and has a buzzer/intercom system. There's a parking lot with an assigned spot for the apartment also. If interested, just leave a comment or email me (temurphy83@yahoo.com) or call 641-414-0021. Thanks to whoever can help!

| ISU Students are only same-sex couple legally married in Iowa |
[31 Aug 2007|06:30pm] |
Gay marriage ruling put on hold BY JEFF ECKHOFF AND ABBY SIMONS REGISTER STAFF WRITERS
August 31, 2007 212 Comments
The Polk County Recorder's office stopped accepting marriage license applications from same-sex couples around 11:30 a.m. today.
The move came shortly after Polk County Judge Robert Hanson agreed to suspend his Thursday ruling that overturned Iowa’s ban on same-sex marriages pending an appeal by the Polk County Attorney’s Office to the Iowa Supreme Court.
Polk County Recorder Julie Haggerty responded immediately by refusing to accept any more same-sex marriage license applications. County officials said 21 marriage licenses were issued before 11:30, most apparently to same-sex couples.
Haggerty said the same-sex couples likely will receive some sort of letter explaining why their license, which would have become valid next week under a mandatory three-business-day waiting period, now will not be accepted.
One couple, Tim McQuillan and Sean Fritz, both Iowa State University students, managed to complete the entire process — waiver, license and wedding — before Hanson again closed the door on same-sex nuptials in Iowa.
It’s not clear whether their marriage will remain legally valid.
“I have no idea what’s going to happen there,” Haggerty said. “As far as I’m concerned, they have a valid marriage certificate from the state of Iowa.”

| ED in ‘08 Reaching Out to Caucus Goers at 2007 Straw Poll |
[10 Aug 2007|02:37pm] |
ED in ’08 will be giving away Maggie Moo’s ice cream & IPODs Ames, IA – The significant need for K-12 education reform will be highlighted to caucus goers in Iowa at the Straw Poll this weekend by Strong American Schools’ ED in ’08 campaign. ED in ’08 will be giving away Maggie Moo’s ice cream and raffling off IPODs and a Macbook computer to caucus goers at their booth throughout the Straw Poll on Saturday.
“The story up until now about the Iowa Straw Poll has been about who’s not attending,” said Marc Lampkin, ED in ’08 executive director. “But ED in ‘08 will be there, making a strong push to reach out to Iowa caucus goers. In Iowa, where only 33% of 4th graders read on grade level, and only 34% of 8th graders are proficient in math, education should be at the front of everyone’s agenda.”
The Straw Poll is just one of several ways the ED in 08 campaign is reaching out to Iowans. This past week in IA, ED in ’08 launched a new television ad campaign, investing more than $45,000 over a nine day period in the Des Moines market to inform Iowans and candidates of the need for K-12 education reform. The ad (which is available on our Web site at www.EDin08.com) features a recent Johnston High School graduate and Iowan, Abby Bowman, 17, who will cast her first vote in a presidential election next year. Also recently, ED in ‘08 had a team of 50 cyclists participate in the RAGBRAI bike tour across the state.
Date: Saturday, August 10, 2007 Time: 9:00 am – 8:00 pm Location: In front of the north entrance to the Hilton Coliseum Lincoln Way and Elwood Drive Ames, IA 50011

Drive-by Shooting in Ames
January 24, 2007--Ames police responded to a drive-by shooting last night. At around 8:30 last night, the owner of the house at 3226 Lincoln way in Ames says he and his family were cooking dinner when the drive-by shooting occurred.
Ames police say they found a vehicle that appears to have been struck by a bullet. Neighbors say they heard the shots, but never thought it was actually gun shots. "It's kind of hard to believe there even were gunshots, we just assumed it was traffic or something random outside, we had no idea that's what it actually would have been,"says neighbor Cody Henke.
No one was injured in the shooting, and the incident will remain under investigation by the Ames police department.

My husband and I are spending Thanksgiving away from our families this year. I'm a vegetarian, so don't plan on making a turkey - but I feel bad that he won't get the traditional dinner.
Are there any places that we could go for dinner the week before Thanksgiving? In Texas, we went to Marie Callendar's but those aren't here.
Thanks!

What are the best restaurants in Ames for a vegetarian?
A native Iowa vegetarian, who is vegetarian because she doesn't like meat, but hasn't actually looked into the the plethora of standard vegetarian dishes. (She isn't sure if she's even had hummus.)

[12 Nov 2006|07:56pm] |
This is a totally random post. I joined this community sometime last week when I happened upon it one night. I lived in Ames for one totally random year of my life. I'm from Massachusetts and have always lived here aside from a year when I decided to drive across the country and live with my aunt in a cute little house on Grand Ave. I have such fond memories of Ames and have always thought I'd go back someday. I actually did apply to ISU for graduate school and got accepted but decided it was too big a move at that time.
So, for now I'm just here to enjoy hearing about the town and what's going on, etc.

| LEASE REASSIGNMENT AVAILABLE NOW |
[28 Oct 2006|01:54pm] |
My boyfriend and I are breaking up - his loss, your gain!!
This is an awesome place and the neighbors are very friendly. The place is located in Mortenson Place, owned by Haverkamp Properties. It used to be more of a family complex but now more college aged people are renting here, so at this point it's really a nice mix - There's a family to my right and three college kids to my left. They're all really friendly people and we were introduced the day we moved in.
It usually goes for a lot more, but since I have an inside connection (my mom!), I got a deal on the monthly rent.
The page with all the property info is (you'll have to copy/paste because i dont know how to do the links):
http://www.haverkamp-properties.com/residential/property.asp?PropertyId=31
The apt is 650 sq.ft. The apartment dimensions can be viewed at:
http://www.haverkamp-properties.com/unit_type_profile/web_version.asp?unittypeId=232
That page will show you that the rent is $700!!
*Pets are allowed in this apartment with a $250 (i think returnable) deposit, plus $40/mo for the first pet and $60/mo for two pets.
*We just got new carpeting in the living room and hallway areas this year - since we were hiding our cats at first the back room and the bedroom weren't done, but they were going to be - you may be able to talk to the apt. manager about putting new carpet in there.
*something else I really liked about this apartment was that it wasn't in a big building - Mortenson Place is more like a bunch of 6-plexes in the same area. That means all units are first floor. Plus, the living room is huge! I rearranged my furniture probably every month and I couldnt get it to look full! (when you see what i'm working with, you'll understand why :))
*As far as maintenance goes, we've had great service. There was one time I spilled too much food on those silver things below the stovetop coil and asked them to replace it - they did. How rediculous is that. We asked for new blinds, had them look at the furnace, and every time we asked they stopped by within one or two days.
*Central Air!! this is cool, i'd never had it before. You can program in what times you want the air/heat to come on, so if you program the heat to come on as you're waking up and shut off when you leave for work, etc, you can save a ton on bills.
*You pay Gas and Electric and for whatever phone line you need. We never had a phone there, just a cell. Haverkamp does offer budget billing, which makes your utilites less of a surprise every month - its a set number. We didn't do that so I'm not sure on all the details.
--Gas and water are through City of Ames, and I'm not expecting my deposit back - you can keep it. I'm paying probably $50-70 each month so far on that (My mom printed off last year's bills for me at that same unit - if you're paying $100/month you're using excess gas).
--Electric is pretty cheap. We don't leave our computer on all the time and try to shut off the lights so maybe that helps, but this months bill is only $32.
Free: cable high speed internet Ames Raquet and Fitness membership garage pool and play equip access
No deposit necessary before November 4th. In otherwords, normally I'd get my deposit back and you'd have to put down another $570, but if you do it before November rent is due, I'm willing to leave my deposit.
Give me a call at 291-0992 as soon as possible. Thank you!

I am getting married next summer and I need to find a place to have my wedding reception. I'm not from Ames, and neither is my FH, so this is a little bit more difficult for us. Hickory Hall is our #1 choice, but they're booked February through October. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it!

I went to the General Sherman, All But Screaming, Ronnie Day, Lovedrug, and The Envy Corps show on Thursday at the House of Bricks in Des Moines, did anyone else?
The Maintenance Shop (in Ames) has a list of upcoming shows on their myspace page (gack!) but haven't updated their website yet. I took the bands and looked them up on last.fm, and added in the number of listeners (a reasonable metric of popularity) in brackets and the similar artists. The irony of marking indie bands with their popularity is not lost on me, but I've never been one to listen to bands just because no one else does, or complain that a group was better when they weren't popular.
I did this for my benefit and posted it to my LJ, but I thought some of you might find it useful as well.
