Hysterisis - the lagging of an effect behind its cause
Artists, have you ever wished you inspired a work of fiction instead of the fiction always inspiring you?
Writers, ever wanted to have a muse, an object of beauty to encourage you to write something to match it?
That’s what the Art Hysterisis is all about. Stepping out of the normal pattern, the usual relationship between art and fandom. Here the art comes first, inspiring the stories that come after.
In Step One, artists are encouraged to submit a heavily manipulated banner, as many as they like and including any characters they wish. These graphics will then serve as the challenge to all the writers of the community in Step Two. The participating authors will have until the end of January to write a short story (minimum length 1,500 words) or a long fic to accompany the banner, which will be personalized with the title and author’s name.
Examples of banner concepts would be if you decided that you would like to read about Jack’s previous experience with UNIT, or Donna tempting at Torchwood One, or what might happen should Suzie and Maria ever meet. The possibilities are endless! I encourage single character or ensemble banners from any of the three Whoniverse shows, and crossovers are eagerly anticipated. Feel free to go for Alternate Universe themes as well. Please try to make the concept as different as possible to what is out there currently.
All banners should be 700x300. All banner submissions (you can submit more than one) need to be mailed to me before October 31 . Once the submission date has passed, I will hand the work over to a committee of experts(TM) to pick the pieces that they believe will bring about the best variety of stories. Those that are chosen will be posted as a challenge, with the specifications and due dates posted at that time.
The community itself was inspired by a similar challenge in the BtVS fandom several years ago at watcherdiaries that was hugely successful. Check out the examples there for an idea of how this can work. It was a great experience for me both as an artist and as a writer, and I hope you enjoy it, too!
