This is the online meeting place for Assembly #1, the first Citizen Assembly that we know of. Our assembly was founded on January 31st, 2006. This community is a place for us to post the minutes of our meetings, schedule things, and discuss issues that are important to us between meetings. This is an important part of the plan for the Human Assembly.
The Human Assembly (humanassembly) is a theory of government under development by Kim E. Lumbard. Basically, it's a hierarchical democracy with accountability on every level. Some of the major problems it attempts to solve are corruption and the lack of human involvement in the political process. By having all political discussion and voting take place in groups of 10 or so people ("Assemblies"), actual discussion and understanding is possible, and we're voting for people we know rather than strangers whose media spin dominates their actual character. There is also an incremental plan for transitioning from the current system of government to the new one. (This is a very poor summary. It's really worth reading the entire document.)
We founded an assembly of our own because we hope that the Human Assembly will be a better system of government than what we have today, and we're willing to take action to make it happen. And hey, if it doesn't work out, then we've just been spending quality time with some of our friends each week, so we've got nothing to lose and plenty to gain.
