I am here to have a good time (ie: cry scream have a meltdown over the silly little fictional people I'm emotionally attached to) - I'm mainly active on Tumblr but have decided to check it out over here as well - at the moment I'm moving over all of my web weaves/gif sets etc... so that they're archived!

I mostly just talk about the Silmarillion these days and plan on doing a third re-read of it relatively soon in which I take notes, so I'll probably make that everybody else's problem as well.

Important: I'm 100% pro-shipper / don't like; don't read / ship and let ship / your kink is not my kink and that's okay

The First Water Is The Body by Natalie Diaz

The Colorado River is the most endangered river in the United States—
also, it is a part of my body.

I carry a river. It is who I am: 'Aha Makav. This is not metaphor.

When a Mojave says, Inyech 'Aha Makavch ithuum, we are saying our name.
We are telling a story of our existence. The river runs through the middle
    of my body.

So far, I have said the word river in every stanza. I don't want to waste water.
I must preserve the river in my body.

In future stanzas, I will try to be more conservative.

    ↠

The Spanish called us, Mojave. Colorado, the name they gave our river be-
    cause it was silt-red-thick.

Natives have been called red forever. I have never met a red Native, not
even on my reservation, not even at the National Museum of the American
Indian, not even at the largest powwow in Parker, Arizona.

I live in the desert along a dammed blue river. The only red people I've seen
are white tourists sunburned after staying out on the water too long.

    Summary:

Anger flares swift and bright in Fëanor's eyes. "Your life is not an acceptable risk! Just because you have continued to wake up so far does not mean you have any guarantee you will continue to do so in the future!"

"I know," he tells Fëanor, because he does. He just hadn't cared. "But even if this is the last song, the last chance, my death would have still run him off. Would have hopefully given you all more time."

Fëanor leans forward until he is right in Fingolfin’s face, a terrible anger on his face, and Fingolfin would be scared if he were not grappling with the idea that the anger is fear for him, not anger because of him. "Your life is not an acceptable risk," Fëanor hisses. "If you were not grievously injured—"

"You'd punch me?" he finishes, laughing softly.

The Last Prom Queen in Antarctica by Ocean Vuong

    It's true I'm all talk & a French tuck
but so what. Like the wind, I ride
my own life. Neon light electric
in the wet part of a roadkill
on the street where I cut my teeth
on the good sin. I want to
    take care of our planet
    because I need a beautiful
    graveyard. It's true I'm not a writer
but a faucet underwater. When the flood comes
I'll raise my hand so they know
who to shoot. The sky flashes. The sea
    yearns. I myself
    am hell. Everyone's here. Sometimes
I go to parties just to dangle my feet
out of high windows, among people.

What Remains Grows Ravenous by Ada Limón

I'm afraid that I won't do the right thing
    in the face of disaster.

Or, I'm afraid I will be stupidly brave.

I'll pull the helmet off the fallen when you're supposed
to leave it on, in case it's holding things together.

Also, I like to discuss my feelings too much.

The only thing I've learned about a home death
is that it requires a lot of washcloths.

    Good Light by Andrea Gibson

    I.
Though I don't remember, I remember my birth
was my first yes. Though I was pushed, yes.
Though there was screaming, yes. Though the light hurt, yes.

I wanted the yes to last forever so badly that I told myself:
We're built like drums. We couldn't make songs
if we had never been hit. It was a desperate theory.

When they told me god was always watching
I said, Who wants to worship a diary thief?
I didn't dare say who wants to worship anyone

who would see everything and just sit there doing nothing
while the devil flossed his teeth with the bow
    of my prettiest violin?

Lullaby on Mount Moriah by Traci Brimhall

The lullaby I wrote on your throat about the stained
hilt of the knife in my hand begins — Whisper, or snow
will come and make its sadness famous in your mouth.

The why of you a radiant devilfish, the what of you
a fat little soul bluing at the edges.

The surest way to receive a free ram is to tie your son’s hands
behind his back. Offer me a metaphor, God said.
Abraham stretched Isaac out on a rock, Like this?

Don’t be impatient with the gift. It will bleed out in the time
it takes shadows and atoms to inch their way between stars.

Every fire thinks it’s a part of God, but lightning
is not a promise, a flag is not a shield. Love wants you
to believe that there’s a God somewhere who can

do your dying for you. There are raptures that won’t
come for you and raptures that will.

In between, satellites blink the news to the lights in our hands.
Love will teach you many things, most of them tragic—

like last last kisses and letters under your windshield wipers,
like helplessness, like the man on the news weeping
and carrying what remains of his son in a plastic bag.

And Abraham said, This is how much I love you, and measured
Isaac from ankle to scalp. Love will gut you and then ask

you to carry on singing with light on your tongue
as a father finds flies crowning his son’s dreamless head,
lambent as the hand of God ushering a late ram from the bushes.

Postcolonial Love Poem by Natalie Diaz

I’ve been taught bloodstones can cure a snakebite,
can stop the bleeding — most people forgot this
when the war ended. The war ended
depending on which war you mean: those we started,
before those, millenia ago and onward,
those which started me, which I lost and won —
    these ever-blooming wounds.
I was built by wage. So I wage love and worse—
always another campaign to march across
a desert night for the cannon flash of your pale skin
settling in a silver lagoon of smoke at your breast.
I dismount my dark horse, bend to you there, deliver you
the hard pull of all my thirsts—
I learned Drink in a country of drought.( Read more... )

He expects to open his eyes, metaphorically speaking, in the Halls of Mandos. That is where the dead go, after all, and after being killed by Morgoth he is indisputably dead. And after the unbearable weight and pain of the last few centuries, he finds himself almost looking forward to the supposed peace of it.

He is therefore moderately bewildered when he finds himself awakening in Barad Eithel.

    Sonnet 7 by Terrance Hayes

I lock you in an American sonnet that is part prison,
Part panic closet, a little room in a house set aflame.
I lock you in a form that is part music box, part meat
Grinder to separate the song of the bird from the bone.
I lock your persona in a dream-inducing sleeper hold
While your better selves watch from the bleachers.
I make you both gym & crow here. As the crow
You undergo a beautiful catharsis trapped one night
In the shadows of the gym. As the gym, the feel of crow-
Shit dropping to your floors is not unlike the stars
Falling from the pep rally posters on your walls.
I make you a box of darkness with a bird in its heart.
Voltas of acoustics, instinct & metaphor. It is not enough
To love you. It is not enough to want you destroyed.

The most infuriating thing lately is how my brain is still going 5000 miles an hour thinking about the Silmarillion and it will just hand me this perfectly scripted, scene blocked fic idea - like just a perfect scroll unrolling in my mind - i know half the characters line their motivations etc and I sit down and go to write and we get about three-quarters of the way through and then [radio static noises] like oh how does it end you ask? yes i’d love to fucking know that too…..so then I gotta grit my teeth and fight for my life to finish the damn thing 😭

Also the way I have this series with two parts and I’m trying to write either the prequel or part 3 and my brain is like hey have you considered like part 7 though? And yes I have actually but we're not there yet.

Woke up this morning and quite literally the first thing I did, half-asleep, before even getting out of my bed, was google “can you combine two languages linguistics” because I woke up thinking about Fëanor and what kind of nonsense he might get up to in 4th Age Aman and was like damn I wonder if he would improve Sindarin just to annoy Thingol or combine it with Quenya or - anyway apparently that’s not a thing and I read an interesting article on what happens when two communities with different native languages combine but still - what a way to start the day.
