Greetings Dorklings
Erm... First time actually posting in a community I've joined (awkward as fuck, indeed). Here goes...

your field(s) of expertise: Classic Literature (Shakespeare, Dante, Chaucer, etc), Music History and pretty much anything to do with the arts...

your hopelessly uncool musical tastes: Opera, Classical (especially Mozart, I love Mozart), Broadway, Classic Rock, Sixties Pop and, of course, I deeply, deeply love Clay Aiken.[/obsessed]

your favorite website: erm... fanfiction.net. Or teenagewildlife.com

your favorite books/authors: Phantom by Susan Kay, The Chronicles of Narnia C.S. Lewis, The Lord of the Rings J.R.R. Tolkien, Mercedes Lacky, etc, etc, could go on and on.

examples of your failings with personal relations: I tend to mock people mercilessly regardless of whether or not they're my friends and it will hurt their feelings. The sarcasm is more important to me. I also tend to get very emotional about things like liking the LotR movies rather than the book. (Grrr.)

something else about why you should be in this community: I, uh, run on Mozilla? Actually... because I'm seventeen and I've yet to have any sort of romantic interaction at all. No kissing, no dates, zip. I'd say that's pretty sad if not dorky. As far as spoken English goes, I'm also a grammar/pronouciation Nazi and I do not accept common usage. (I'm still irritated about the new, completely different meaning of the word 'gay'.)

Anyway. That's me babbling on incoherently.

field(s) of expertise: Languages, Writing Systems, Commas, Orchestration.

hopelessly uncool musical taste: *cough* Central Asian folk music (Longsong pwns!), Contemporary classical music, Electronic.

favorite website: omniglot.com, wikipedia.com

favorite books/authors: Erm... lessee, A Series of Unfortunate Events (*cough*), The Old Kingdom Series, Spoken Here ('bout dying languages), Memoirs of a Geisha.

examples of failings with personal relations: My irrational fears of strangers, loud people, people taller that me, morbidly obese people, horses, bleach blondes, morbidly thin people, sweating, cockroaches, and conservatives severely hinder what would probably already be a very tiny social life...

something else about why you should be in this community: I also have a phobia of stereotypes. For example, I don't like apples because they're stereotypical fruits. I'm slightly synesthetic, meaning I have concepts, colors, ideas, foods, etc. for individual words, concepts, shapes, etc. Even though I live in America, I spell "favourite" with a U. But not "color" or "splendor" or whatever. Oh, and my favourite color is chartreuse.

my application. i am not worthy
all right. I may seem like a pseudo-hipster. because I happen to own CDs by Interpol and Morrissey- does this disqualify me? Seriously. I'm so insecure I can't leave my house some days. The nerds at my school don't even notice me! Please don't let me leave, it will be the saddest day of my pretty pathetic existence. I am a big blubbering ball of angst.

your field(s) of expertise: pop culture? history. on some level, grammar and religion.

your hopelessly uncool musical tastes: I like to sing "Careless Whisper" and "You Raise Me Up" in the shower. Besides, the fact that I like Clay Aiken has shunned me from the elitists of the world. And William Shatner, all the way.
your favorite website: I'm addicted to livejournal. wow.
your favorite books/authors: Kafka. to me, there is nothing sexier than Kafka. that is sad that I enjoy reading about being turned into a giant bug.
examples of your failings with personal relations: I've never had a serious romantic relationship. The closest I get to being happy is when I'm hugged by the girl I like. Then, I realize what an emo loser I am.
something else about why you should be in this community: oh, dear. my best friend weighs three pounds and eats her own feces. I know more about World War One than I do my own parents. Most of my good friends are online, and my social life is...three inches in diameter. Um, I can quote Groucho Marx, Morrissey and Tori Amos pretty damn well, which scares the few people I talk to.

field(s) of expertise - I'm a closet calculus fan :) and I love UNIX

hopelessly uncool musical taste - I LOVE Frank Sinatra!

favorite website - livejournal.. the first real thing I do in the morning is check it.. even before my email.. doesn't get much sadder than that huh.. and I like ebaum's world
favorite books/authors - authors: Ray Bradbury and Mitch Albom; books: Candide, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451
examples of failings with personal relations - this would be a much shorter list if I gave an example of my successes... OK I'm done
something else about why you should be in this community - Umm, I'm the biggest spaz ever. I've been known to walk into trees, fall up steps, walk into poles and signs, trip over nothing (on busy streets with my fellow college students all around to laugh at me), and stay home on weekend nights and sit on my computer. Wow I never really realized how sad I am until I wrote this! hahah geez I suck :)

Thank God there's a community for people like me. Dorks unite! We have nothing to lose. :) Hope there's room for one more.

Field(s) of expertise: I study linguistics. In my spare time. By choice.
Hopelessly uncool musical tastes: Norah Jones is making jazz somewhat cool again, so that doesn't count...
Favourite website: the Klingon Language Institute
Favourite books/authors: The Princess Bride, Lord of the Rings, bilingual dictionaries (my most recent acquisition was Elvish to English)
Examples of your failings with personal relations: I haven't been on a date in four years
Something else about why you should be in this community: I love computers, and I write down all the eight-letter words I play in games of Scrabble. That, and I have absolutely no clue when it comes to dating. If I were born ten years earlier I could have been the star of Weird Science.

Pleased to meet you all. :D

This is just the kind of self-deprecating thing I've been dying to post since I found this community. That's two days, you know.

Right, let's see.

- I'm living the best years of my life on the internet. Normally pretending to be older than I actually am, and generally too shy to actually do anything. Christ alive. I tend to watch communities and be too scared to post. Be flattered that this is, I believe, the first community I've ever posted in. Forgive my nervous ramblings.

- favourite website. Erm. Probably Livejournal. No, that's terrible. I'll say Rum & Monkey.

- favourite music- Well, I'm living in the past. So... The Beatles, The Smiths, early Placebo and Manic Street Preachers, Blondie, and a bunch of early punk that I bought to look cool in front of a sales assistant. Woo.

- examples of your failings with personal relations- Where do I begin? I am the eternally single one, whose idea of a 'relationship' is occasionally getting my friend drunk so she kisses me. Wahey. Yes, I'm just a bundle of angst.

- something else about why you should be in this community- Me= tall, lanky, clumsy, slow to understand that other people don't understand, attempting to deal with the new shower fitting. I correct everybody's spelling and grammar, although I can't spell or use grammar myself. I attend an ALL GIRLS school. Yes, it is bad. I spend most of my friday nights on MSN with people I used to have crushes on, normally until about 2am. I've run out of ideas, and I'm scared this community has been abandoned and nobody's told me. Er.

i wanna be in the cool club. er. you know.
Field of Expertise: I don't have expertise yet, but maybe one day I'll be a real historian.

Uncool Musical Tastes: I can still sing along with all those eighties soft rock hits. Wham!! Phil Collins! The Flashdance soundtrack! My vinyl collection, rather than being cool, is the product of my tastes at fourteen and consequently, pretty scary. That's why I never show it off. People would point and laugh.

Favorite Website: Right this instant, it's Small Stories. I'm trying to work up the nerve to send Derek Kim adoring fan letters and drawings.

Favorite Books/Authors: Lois McMaster Bujold. History books I have to read for class. One hundred year old back issues of Ladies' Home Journal. Children's books.

Example of Failed Relationships: Hahahahahaha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Um... please. I still don't know why the last boy broke up with me. He did once say something about *mutterbullshitcough* having nothing in common.

Something else about why you should be in this community: I think this says everything that needs to be said..

Field of Expertise: Pop culture references that would confuse even Dennis Miller

Uncool Musical Tastes: Synth Pop - made three signs for American Idol tapings saying, "Go Clay, My Leprechaun of Love", "Clay is Adorkable" and "Clay is still Adorkable"

Favorite Website: ScottLowell.com

Favorite Books/Authors: Anything on Greek mythology or urban legends, John Irving

Example of Failed Relationships: Turned off one guy by complimenting his Alex Ross poster of the Green Arrow

Something else about why you should be in this community: I was voted biggest geek in my class in '98.

saddest of all..
ahem elo..

i searched 'clay aiken' on lj, came up with this, and came to this conclusion: i'm looking up clay aiken lj communities on a friday night, and i'm 16. i'm lame as fuck.

lol, should have occurred to me earlier, ah well.. here's my ten reasons i'm now joining this nifty lil thing you guys've got here:

1) i'm sitting at home searching up clay aiken communities on lj on a friday night ><*
2) i'm 6'0 and feel just awful when i can't think of a line to answer 'hey'
3) i'm amused beyond reason by the words 'boobs' and 'boosums' lmao
4) i get thrown off and don't want to go to class cause i'm worried my teachers are cooler than i am ><*
5) i can't flirt. i couldn't even flirt with my gf. i. can't. flirt. i change the subject.
6) i'm 6'0, did i mention this? i trip over tables.
7) i get insanely stressed over meeting new people, or over not meeting enough new people ><*
8) my sexuality is so undefined i may as well say i'm possumsexual ><*
9) i can walk into a room and immediately do a half dozen subtle things to make everyone there sneer and hate me...
10) friday night! online! feeling like such a loser... *sigh*

there's tons more :p i haven't even got to my music taste, or how i can talk endlessly if it's an intellectual discussion but clam up and turn red if someone says 'nice hair' lol. damn...

I'm watching 'Everybody's Baby: The Baby Jessica Story' on FOX. You remember, the baby stuck in the well. She's probably high school by now. Not watching this movie, I'm sure of THAT.

yes, I'm a dorkface, I'm interacting with my computer on a Thursday night
last night, while watching the American Idol, my friend and I made up a new word: ADORKABLE*,
Because Clay Aiken is ADORKABLE.
Other peole who fit into the ADORKABLE catagory:

Antione from the current Battle of the Sexes. He's tri-lingual, and my sister, rossybandit HATES him

Jamie Oliver AKA the naked chef.. actually, I'm not quite sure if he's adorkable or just plain cute)

Maggie Gyllenhaal of The Secretary and Adaptation fame

Chan Marshall of Cat Power.. she's so shy and I'm sure she'd fit right in here, if we didn't scare her

My screenwritting prof, Ethan something, because he stutters and shifts and can't look people in the eye, and one time he spent an entire class with CHALK ON HIS BUTT. Sigh.

I'm sure there's lots of people I'm missing. Come on, people, who else do you think is adorkable?

*meaning someone so dorky they're cute, and you just want to put them in your pocket and hold their hands sometimes and maybe kiss them.

Why I am sometimes lame
1) I am anal about deleting spam the moment it arrives
2) I look at people's toes (not as a turn on, just as a curiosity)
3) I voted for both Clay and Ruben on American Idol, a few times
4) Before I kill a bug in the house I say 'sorry, buddy'
5) I tend to watch movies on cable that I already own
6) I can't figure out why I just changed to a 'paid user' on LJ
7) I have a shirtless picture of Justin Timberlake on my wall at work

that is all.

Hm?
Top 10 or so reasons I joined this community:

-When I read a book and I really like I read it over and over and over, and obsess about it for months at a time without ever reading another book.
-I can quote from Harry Potter.
-I have a weird knack for figuring out codes.
-I've learned most of my Japanese vocabulary (mind you, it's very small) from subbed anime.
-I can count to 5 in 4 languages.
-Double chins weird me out.
-My greatest fear is an alien invasion.
-I used to have a crush on Tom Brokaw. Now it's Daniel Radcliffe.
-I prefer to communicate through writing instead of actualy talking.

Hope this place becomes a hubub for dorks. :)
